a 400mm ish lens on a camera from about 50M should sort that. Any good approach angles?
Not really, you're too hemmed in - best you'll get is a profile, unless you fancy hanging around waiting for them to look in your direction.

my girlfriends bike has just been nicked and we are planning on heading down brick lane (wouldnt normally bothered but its pretty special and distinctive) on sunday to see if we can spot it

sound like the best options are once (if) your spot your bike ring the police, take evidence and avoid a beating with chains!
i was originally planning to test the bike and speed off to a local police station if they give chase, however i may look like a gorilla on a circus bike on my gfs bike because it is a tiny 43cm frame and has 650 wheels!
heres hoping they are stupid enough to try and fence it!

yeah that was my bike, we trawled brick lane this weekend (in the pouring rain) - 4 hours and several market food munchies later and no luck :(.... although i was offered 3 stolen bikes none of which were good enough to be on lfgss sorry guys!
