A workstand was a revelation for my bike tinkering. Lots of jobs that I thought were beyond me became really easy once I'd bought one.
Beyond that, it depends what bike you own. Really good allen keys at about £20 are a good investment. The rest of it I managed to pick up at car boot sales.

I've never owned a workstand, yet I've somehow managed to build and rebuild a whole fleet of bikes from bare frames without one.

I have one and used it once to build a bike. It does make life easier but possible without one.

Park Tools should so have a "build you own tool box" section on their website that lets you pick everything you actually need. Otherwise you just end up with loads of cone spanners.

Buy them as you need them.

Less validation of your opinion, more agreement with a, pretty rational, idea. You vain bastard. ;)

Did you miss the --> :P <--
I don't need validation of my opinion because I already know it's right.. you should know this about me by now ;)
I get bored/annoyed seeing a bunch of +1, "yes", "lovely bike" type posts so thought I'd fuck with you. Now go and bake some scones or something.

Fair play to you, but my experience is it's much easier to work on a bike if it's held still. Buy one, and you'll get even better at working on your bikes.

I'm sure this is true, but it is a very low priority given that it's just going to get in the way in my small flat between builds, and there always seem to be more exciting ways to spend £150 to £200

(non argumental comment)
think my workstand was about 60-70 delivered. one of the simpler park tools ones, works a treat and folds up pretty good
