    your saddle is set very very low, of course it's too small for you.

  • i will be leaving the paint on! dont have the money to do it up yet.. hopefully i wont run into anyproblems though!

  • here's a though, why don't you run it as it is?

    it look like it doesn't take much to restore it to it's former glory, in fact, a quick polish, new gumwall tyres (panaracer pasela TG), change a few bit like saddle etc. not only it would look fantastic but it'll be cheap as chip too since there's little to change.

    a good example (although costly due to additional extra like Brooks, VO rack, mudguard, 650c wheelset instead of 700c etc.) is this;

  • For me, part of the beauty of these bikes is the paint job. If you take that away, you also take part of its character.

    But that is a very personal opinion.

  • it's worth getting it checked by the LBS before you ride it to see if it's true and straight.

  • So here' my conversion, I bought this peugeot about 6 years off ebay and rode it as a roadbike but now I converted it to singlespeed for commuting, love this bike despite it's old and heavy ;)

  • Hi all,

    First time on this forum as I'm about to ditch my hulk of a mountain bike after buying my first old road racer, so I am a total new comer to the world of single speed/fixies.

    I got a Peugeot Premiere (it looks like an old 80's one on Carbolite 103 tubing? 54cm frame) for £25. The frame/forks are sound but a bit scruffy, as I am starting out in this brave new world I thought it would be a good canvas for starting out. It still has the gears and the front wheel is shot. The handlebars are ready for the bin along with the breaks.

    I really don't know where to start with the mods or what I should be looking for or where to get my parts from... ebay seems the best bet but knowing what to get with a budget of around £200 is a headspinner.

    I know I want to make it single speed with front/back break. I want straight/riser handlebars. other than that I haven't a clue and being that wet behind the ears bit worried about walking into a cycle shop and getting ripped off.

    If anyone can show the light or send to its way, it would be massively appreciated. Really looking forward to getting the Pug up and running and putting the Hulk in the bin!

  • I found the best starting point was to buy a flip-flop hub, built into a rim if possible. This avoids having to mess about converting your existing wheel. You can aim for £50-£100 for that. Then just make sure your BB is tight, re-grease it if you don't know what condition it's in, replace the bearings if they are dump. Apart from that, just get bits and pieces you like the look of. I started with an 80's Peugeot and it was all ebay parts.

  • if you just want a single speed you can keep your existing rim, just go to a bike shop and get them to take off your old freewheel, buy a new singlespeed freewheel (£7-10), take a few links out of your chain so it fits and your done!

    worked great on my 89 carbolite and saved me a lot of money, chain allignment isnt perfect but its close enough, and the existing chain is made for derailleurs anyway so it'll have a bit of flex and still work and not come off

  • Buy yourself a cheap rear wheel if you are on a budget and any 700c front wheel will do the job. You can then pick up a new chain,crank set and BB easy enough and that's job done!

    it comes with 2 shims all you have to do is cut one in half an it fits perfectly!

  • ended up having same trouble with mine about the french threading. managed to hammer the cranks of though! i got some old peugeot wheels to just need to convert the back to fixed and im all done

  • I ended up getting a new frame, got a bit sick of having to take apart the old bb as it kept winding itself in(couldnt fit a lockring with new spindle). how did u solve the problem sam91?
