  • hehe, yeh.. just involoved alot of work! bloody loc-tight

  • rotafix requires an intimate understanding of clockwise and anti-clockwise - something I do not have. I spent 40 minutes tightening a cog before realising this.

  • get it in a vice

  • Woohoo. Overnight soak of WD40 and another go this morning - success.

Spoke replaced, now just need to put it all back together. Ta for advice.

  • i had a hard time getting mine off, its locktight......

  • is it off or are you just commenting? have you chainwhipped? rotafixed? wd40'd?

  • yep its off now, wd40 + chainwhip + strength = off... the tread on the was a bit damaged

  • off now,Wd40+chainwhip+gimpmask+strength+ jerk off-thread a bit damaged

  • Turning it the right way ? (the opposite way to how the lock ring turns)

sorry for dragging up an old thread but is this right? how can it tighten/release the opposite way to the lock ring, is it double threaded?

i'm having the same problem the bloke in my local bike shop broke his chain whip trying to get it off the other day, i've just been back to tell him that it comes off in the opposite direction and he thinks i'm mad haha, he didn't have time to look at it today but he's going to have another round with it next week, but he says he wont be held accountable for any damage it causes so i'm just checking the info is right
    cheers

  • spocket goes on clockwise, lockring goes on anti-clockwise. If they both screwed in the same direction it would be pointless.
If it's also for a fuji track, the stock one comes with a bit of locktite on it, so takes muscle to get it off.

  • Yeah, they use some sort of red threadlock. I remember it being a bugger to shift, even with my home-made 3 foot chainwhip.

  • Warm it up with a hot air gun to help release the loctite

Yep, the lock ring screws on in the opposite direction to the cog it is securing, the bloke in your local bike shop does't know what he is doing.

  • How can it tighten/release the opposite way to the lock ring, is it double threaded?

The diameter of the lockring is smaller than the cog, so the screw threads are entirely separate.

The threading on the left of the pic below will take a cog + lockring; the threading on the right will only take a cog:

  • Marginally clearer picture:

  • Hey guys. Got a problem with my sugino cog. As I'm sure some of you know the sugino cogs dont thread directly onto the hub like most cogs, instead there is an adapter that threads onto the hub and the cog then fits onto the adapter and then a lockring. The lockring uses an external bottom bracket tool to remove/install aswell as the adapter. When I tried removing the adapter to replace the cog with a new dura ace one, the adapter began to loosen but then becomes tight again after about half a turn. I took the wheel to a few bike shops and they all said that its 'threaded'. I'm not sure how to go about removing the adapter as I dont want to damage the hub as it will ruin the whole wheel basically. Have been turning it the right way also. Have just tightened it up and put the lockring back on so I can use the wheel.
Cant reverse rotafix either as the cog just comes off the adapter when the lockring is removed... Any ideas how to fix this?

  • Just had a nightmare getting a cog off. Ended up putting the wheel in a frame, wrapping the chain whip on the cog and resting the handle on a chain stay. Then had Mrs Sparky sit on the forks as ballast while I turned the wheel like a lorry driver. Bit of a struggle, two little marks on the wood floor, but success. Anyone care to name this new technique?

  • sounds like an overly complicated version of rotafixing you'd still be achieving the same level of torque as your turning from the wheel still.

  • I'm about to try this rotafix lark.. Been riding all week without a lockring, even skidding and it's still on there.. Tis a Langster btw, not sure if they weld the cog on perhaps? lol.

  • From stock I think they use some loctite, it can be very hard to remove but is manageable.

  • Just tried this method for the first time, worked like a charm! Thanks for the link to the vid....

  • I also have a stuck cog ,does anybody know where I can get of this rotafixed object from?cheers
