Ok as a follow up to this, I went and bought some clips and double straps from Tokyo Fixed Gear, but haven't installed them yet (doing that this weekend for a little bit of practice thats not on Holborn Junction!).
I also contacted the company that make powergrips and they offered a refund or a replacment. Apprently these were never meant for fixed gear riders and they've made a newer version that is stronger. Their customer service was great and they've managed to send me a new pair of their fixie model from their UK distributer free of charge.
I must say their customer service was great and they responded very prompty and kept in touch, so maybe I'll try the new ones out and if not they'll be going on my custom build I'm planning for a winter project....
