Are there any peer reviewed scientific studies of the benefits? I'd prefer to read them than marketing bullshit from manufacturers (FWIW I work in marketing and we'd never use scientific studies to back up our arguments unless they agreed with what we wanted to say).

Lactic acid is actually a fuel, not a caustic waste product. Muscles make it deliberately, producing it from glucose, and they burn it to obtain energy. The reason trained athletes can perform so hard and so long is because their intense training causes their muscles to adapt so they more readily and efficiently absorb lactic acid.

The trouble is many conflicting views and reports based on "science" the fact is many people still refer to blood lactate as lactic "acid" despite there being no acid as such in the body.
The older, and more accepted as incorrect , view is that this lactate causes muscle soreness. Which we all know is actually caused by having sore muscles.

lactate:
- can be used as a fuel,
- is a by product of anaerobic glycolysis
- referred to 'lactic acid' as usually there is a drop in pH associated with its production (mainly through increased CO2)
I'm currently wearing one sock, after straining/minor tear in my calf. As mentioned i think it helps by increasing blood flow, particularly by keeping the area warm. Also the compression part aids in stopping the area swelling and aiding lymph flow.

yes, you do measure lactate in blood ~2-4mM resting, >8-10mM extreme exercise. currently i'm designing fancy electrochemical sensors to monitor it continuously ;)

Have the tights wear them for long runs/rides/skiiing and recovery
I think they work.
Definately reduce soreness and they supposedly delay fatigue during exercise.
