  • He's in now I just chatted to him about some work.
He's pretty nice, quite small, very likeable.

This will be my 1st time using him so will let you know how it goes.
I was gonna Armourtex it but he works two streets away from me!

  • Been to Mario's this afternoon, lovely guy, really really nice... albeit I had to make sure he kept taking notes of what I needed/wanted, all the time and still I checked it before leaving. No sweat, ended up knowing (I'd always wondered the origin of his name), his parents are from Goa (ex-portuguese colony), kinda trying to get some extra brownie points there : D.
Anyway, the 3 frames I took will be done progressively, since his 'help' to deal with any repairs has had some sort of problems, had to go to the hospital in december... and apparently, welding (smokes), were the problem!...so no answer on whether the panasonic's DT can be repaired.
Turn around time, 1st frame end of this week, the Carlton is going to take 9 days, the Panasonic might take up to 3/4 weeks, depending on answer.
    Will update.

  • Good evening all

having read through this thread, I hope we all appreciate how problematical it can be to refinish an old frame. the 'prep' involved is very time consuming, particularly when one has to rub down by hand between coats. recreating the finish applied to hand built frames from 50s/60s/70s is difficult, and within a sensible cost frame, almost impossible. The old 'stove enamel' finish is, as previously 'threaded' no longer strictly available, and the nearest we can now achieve is probably via a first class motor car refinisher, using water based two pack paint, and I can't find one who wants to do the detail work a reasonable price.

I have just had a '70's' Fred James 531C frame sand blasted, etch primed and powder coated gloss white. Almost perfect-the finish is by it's nature too heavy round the lug detail-and here i am with an 'unadorned' frame, with a tough finish for sub £100. Now, any motorist pays £100+ for an oil change service-so we must surely pay more for a frame refinish!

I have an original 'pre '63' Freddie Grubb which I would dearly love to have refinished-'as new' with it's lovely 'feather paint'- but where have the hand painters gone?!

How Vaz does what he does for the price i don't know, but long may he continue!

    Cheers all!

  • The all thing (inc. removal and fitting of BB and HS + 1 solid (metallic) colour + fitting the headbadge + All transfer (but the 531 awesome) + lug lining) = £98.
1 week turn around time. And i have to admit, the only 'down' in the all thing is probably the way he finished the rear drop-outs, I'll try to post a picture soon.
    Besides that, perfecto.
(this was less than half of the cheapest price quoted from any other builder, painter... inc. Argos, Mercian, BJ, UCC, Roberts...)

  • That frame looks gorgeous!

Hippy ? Dave? Thread name change thingy?

  • Cool, good to know!

What don't you like about the ends? The mask into the chrome a bit scrappy? I just saw one of your other pics...

  • Yeah, lets get it changed once and for all.

PM to hippy & Velocio on way.

  • Does indeed look luverly:-)
I should find out how my Joe Waugh fared sometime next week but that frame sure does bode well.

Thats it, still had bits of masking tape under the paint... like 1mm or 2, but i'm thick, soooo thick with this sorta stuff : D I took care of it with some tweezers.

  • Nice work.

I've got one frame restored by Mario and I like it too.

Nice one Skully - I'm an apathetic motherfucker and have seen this thread a couple of times and not said 'owt. Mario is the kind of guy that we should be supporting and a nice dude to boot.

That Carlton ^^^ incidentally is *the shit. *

  • All the VAZ frame job's, have looked really good.

  • He should call himself MazVaz

  • ...and they look pretty good to me!

I've got another four frames with him at the moment, and and I sure they will be just as good.

And yes, he is a lovely fellow and it is always a pleasure to visit him.

so (and I feel this is the consensus of opinion)...

PLEASE CHANGE THE TITLOE OF THIS THREAD!

A whole shelf of cycling books you have there; and a strong interest in design and music? Who lives in a house like this? Let's find out, as we go through the keyhole...

  • Well Will, somebody whose wife is from near Wigan!!

Lovely collection mate, and nice book collection ; )

Bit rough is she? (risky joke). :)

  • NEAR Wigan Will, NEAR Wigan!

He's just done a Bates BAR for me with six decals in a single colour for £89*.
I said "let's call it £90" but he wouldn't accept it and gave me £1 change!
The decals are quite expensive as well so I think it's a good deal.
Oh and he removed a fixed bottom bracket cup and an oiler on the bottom bracket as well.
It's the second frame he's done for me.

    Mario is a top guy.
The world would be a poorer place without him.

    *Headbadge/seattubex2/downtubex2/forksx1
I'll post some pix when it's built up.

Mine was £98, and i didn't take the 2 pounds back...we had to fight a bit, but I beat the shit outta him, and legged it.
