The mixed categories gives people the option to switch category on the night, depending on how they're feeling. Last year there were plenty of people riding in the B's who could've handled riding with the A's, but were too scared to commit to stepping up. If they could've just tried one night too see how it went it would've have been such a big deal.
Likewise, there were some A's who got ill/sidetracked for a few weeks, tried to come back a few weeks later, and were getting left behind. After a while they stopped coming. If they had the option of riding down with the B's they could've carried on.
The points work like this. The first 6 in an A cat race get, 6,5,4,3,2,1, whereas the first 6 in a B cat race get 0.6, 0.5, 0.4, 0.3, 0.2, 0.1. All the points count towards the same overall ranking.
From this, you can take that coming 6th in one A cat race, is worht coming 2nd twice in a B cat race. Which I think is reasonably comparable.
For combined races, where A and B cat's race together only the first 6 get A cat level points (6,5,4,3,2,1). Anyone can score the points.
There will always be the combined "warm up" race at the start of every meeting. There will also be the combined long race at the end (10/15/20k), but the last race doesn't count towards ranking points as there are cash prizes on offer. Last night we had a "Hare and Hounds" which was a combined race with combined points, the B's have a half a lap head start.
Within a week or two once we get more light, only the first and last races will be combined, and the last race won't even count towards the rankings.
