Threaded rod for headset press

Posted on
  • Got a long thick threaded rod to make headset press with which is 1m long. Hopefully I can cut in half and someone else can have it for some cash money or something nice ( bike related)
    thank you. N1 or Camden

  • Build a universal crank puller too

  • Got a crank puller. How do I make one out of that? Anyone want half?

  • Any engineering place will sell you a suitable length of offcut for about 50p. And the nuts and washers too.

  • Yeah I already bought the rod in a 1 m length on works account. Just seeing if anyone wants half to make a Headset press too.

  • You'll probably fuck the threads when you chop it...

  • why? Is that what you did?

  • I was thinking that. I'm sure I can sort out my half. Anyway, if anyone wants half...

  • you put 2 nuts on one end and tighten them against each other
then you put a nut just before half way
cut it, then unthread the middle nut, holding the 2 you tightened together at the bottom
then the thread doesn't get "fucked" as you put it

  • Putting nuts on the bolt/rod before you cut it is the right way.
Same when you cut a threaded steerer tube.

This is helpful too (or a file)

  • But if he's only cutting it in half, and the ends are currently good, then it don't matter :)

sdw - that's a kind offer. You have pm.
