It'll all work fine as long as you have the right bottom bracket for the Pista chainset. To get a 42 mm chainline you'll need a 111 mm Campag bottom bracket. The Centaur one is as good as the Record Pista one and about a third of the price.

Thanks for the quick feedback - I'll have a look at the Centaur BB.

You got Ellipse through Evans cycle to work? Which branch? Can't find them on the website.
Mavic lockring (why it doesn’t come with the wheels I don’t know...)
Because they are a track wheelset, not a fixie fixie fixie wheelset.

mavic elipse wheels rule!
woo-hoo! -

ellipse wheels rule until you break one - and then you find out that only France has parts to fix them. And then you look sad because you don't see your lovely wheel for weeks.

I got them on the website - had to wait weeks for them to turn up, try here:

My Zxellium road shoes arrived today too, very, very yellow...

Ah, I see, Evans wonderful website, can't sell a pair of Ellipse, just a front and rear individually.

I got a front Mavic Elpise wheel a while back and was going to put it on my bike soon. I just examined it very closely and there is a tiny hole on the deep section. This isn't right is it? Should I send it back?

If it looks clean and machined, then yes, its fine, leave it.
-
• #11
Cheers Guy, I was hoping you would be the voice of reason.
Yes it is completely machined, a brand new wheel. It looks like it may have been a machine error but was just a bit concerned that's all. Over than that it is 100% -

about 1-2mm hole about 1cm in from the edge of the rim?
No idea what it is for, loads of wheels have it.

• #13
yep thats the one :)

Maybe for expansion when they get hot, like bridges?

Weight balancing?

wheel maggots.

If it's like the little holes on DT Swiss rims, it's a wear indicator. When the little hole's gone, change the rim.

• #18
On a track wheel? Surely not.

No, its a hole, drilled right through the rim, below the 'braking surface'.

If the hole isnt on the braking surface its where the pin was inserted that is used to join the rim.
Wouldnt worry about it.

Or so the air trapped in the section between the two walls does not expand an make the rim into a pipe bomb when welded or machined. You'll see similar holes on the stays of your frame.
I’m currently riding a Pearson’s Touché and for a while now have been saving for a new frame. In the meantime my company signed-up to Evans’ ride-to-work scheme. Didn’t want any of the complete bikes, so bought a crap bike to use for the pub and splashed out on a few new components for the Touché that I could put on a new frame as/when I scrape together enough pennies for it
Alongside a few other bits I picked up a Mavic Ellipse wheelset. After getting the Mavic lockring (why it doesn’t come with the wheels I don’t know...) and an EAI cog, I’ve been looking an new chainsets. A guy at work has a new (’09) Campag Pista chainset, English thread, for sale at a reasonable price
I’ve been thinking about getting it, but am a bit concerned about chain alignment, had a look at the transmission DB but couldn’t find the same set-up. Also I’ve read the Pista BB doesn’t have road seals.
Does anyone have an idea if this combination would work? And are the track BB’s ok for road use?
