jaw - that referendum should not be used as a measure of public sentiment.
there was trickery! and poorly worded preambles that confused many not-so-clevers in Australia. Plus the combining of the republican question, with a reconciliation question alienated racists who might have been republicans and monarchists who weren't racists.
when people are confused they often just say NO.
