i just force it open with a penknife, one side up and over then the other.

That'll bend it, you unclip it in the opposite direction of the gaps... along the chain, just push it with a screwdriver or similar.

just use anything flat, like a screwdriver or wrench and push against the open side.

I put a flat bladed screwdriver between the link pins at 90 degrees off the face of the side plate, and then rotate the screwdriver so that the link is opened vertically without twisting it. Then you can just slide it off with your thumb.

Fitting it was easy enough; though I suspect that removal will be trickier.
Is there a special knack to getting this on and off, or do I just force it and hope for the best?
