I tried power grips a year or so ago and they are a nice design to fit your shoe into, but mine also snapped when pulling (an emergency) skid. They're not really made for that sort of dramatic tug, so I'd steer well clear (I looked like a right cunt falling off my bike). Just get some double straps on your lead foot.

alright apologies for implying it was your fault. I think you would be alright with those clips and straps for a while. I have snapped metal clips before and have heard of people sanpping leather straps. i used plastic double gate clips and nylon straps day in day out couriering and never had a problem

If it's worth straps, its worth clipless. It does mean buying cycling shoes,** but you should be considering them anyway as it may prevent you from fucking up your arches.**
Can you explain this for me?
Double straps and cages are great and very comfy, only problem being they make a mark on your shoes, all my trainers have "V" shape on the toe now...

That would be pretty interesting. Riding left foot Atac, and right foot Keo.
SPD-SL recognition fail.
Try again, this time considering the images as 'options'. :)

Maybe you should stop sewing razor blades onto the tops of your shoes?

I dont like powergrips personally because of the need to twist your foot to get out of 'em. But they are tried and tested in mtb'ing for years so i would say it would be more likely to be user installation fail
nobody uses power grips or any kind of straps for mtb'ing now technology has moved on. it's either flats and with grippy 5-10's vans etc or spd/times.

Clips & straps definitely don't feel as secure as SPD or ATAC. I'd never go back to clips & straps, I love the solid feeling of a cycling shoe.
If you're into skidding, you want something with a much stronger connection. You could repair your straps and just stop skidding though.

Planet X do double cages and double straps for about £35 (It was £30 when I got them a year or so ago). They've been really good, despite the cheap price. Maybe worth a look? They're out of stock at the moment but they're a friendly bunch, you could always drop them an email and ask when they will be getting new stock in.

@C:V - Where's the fun in that? :)
I have a front brake, so don't rely on skidding as my main stopping mechanism, but when there's no cars around and I'm going a little to fast to just resist to a stop I like to do a skid...
Went and got cage and straps yesterday from Tokyo Fixed Gear. Haven't put them on yet, just fixed the powerstraps temporarily and am not skidding...

Powergrips are well know for doing that, as they are only secured by friction rather than a bolt. Personally i would choose the new fangeld FRS style straps over toe clips, but SPD above all

Ok as a follow up to this, I went and bought some clips and double straps from Tokyo Fixed Gear, but haven't installed them yet (doing that this weekend for a little bit of practice thats not on Holborn Junction!).
I also contacted the company that make powergrips and they offered a refund or a replacment. Apprently these were never meant for fixed gear riders and they've made a newer version that is stronger. Their customer service was great and they've managed to send me a new pair of their fixie model from their UK distributer free of charge.
I must say their customer service was great and they responded very prompty and kept in touch, so maybe I'll try the new ones out and if not they'll be going on my custom build I'm planning for a winter project....

well, chicago wig's are £36 from tokyo fixed, restrap's (google it) are £20 and similar to powergrips but more durable, a set of clipless pedals and shoes will be more than £50, good double straps, clips and pedals will be £50ish.
