  • If you don't mind my saying so, 531c is a very poor choice for a touring bike, unless your girlfriend is very light and doesn't carry much luggage.

I have a few bits that would sort this bike, though. Exage, Deore or LX, depending on how much you want to pay.

Don't worry - she is light and won't be carrying much weight - only intending light, relaxed touring with this - pottering around France for a week or so, weekends away, nothing too tough. I'd be carrying most of the weight - I built up my touring bike for the Himalayas so it's very tough (but more mtb style which is why I'm confused over gearing on this bike).

PM me with what parts you've got, might be interested.

  • Sorry to butt in but do you have a use planned for the 27" wheels you're taking off? I could use some if they'd be going cheap, that is all. Let me know if so, but no worries if not

I was probably going to freecycle them here... it may be a while before this happens as I'm being incredibly slow about sorting this bike out, but if you still need them by then, you can probably have them.

  • ad - would be interested in a full bike - all the bits you need except the band on for index shifters?
, vuleta 700c airlite semi deep wheels with 7 speed cassette and shimano (probably exage) indexed shifters, diacompe levers (just like the shimano areo levers,) stronlight triple c. 50/40/30, deore XT rear mech. - all comes on wht i bought as a 501 frame (56cm crank to top and 56cm on the top tube) - i suspect actually the frame is mid level oria tubing - around the 501 mark cro-mo but Italian - used on the off-the-peg mosers and the like

largest cog on rear is only 24 but i could fit the deore lx crankset seen above 42/32/22 - if you're not getting up to very high top speeds and your mrs. is not enthusiastic on any climbs (like mine) then this is the option to go for.

it has no mudguard holes but this will take mudguards (i might be able to supply an old pair to fit ) with 700x 23 tyres and will take probably take 700x28 without guards - or with bikini guards -

brakes are sacci branded double fulcrum alloy cantilevers - probably made by tektro at a guess - exage / sora sort of level.

i'm keeping the saddle on this though - i'll find something else to put on it.

i'd want 75 plus whatever it costs to post (or pick up? ). - what do you reckon

  • oh yeh - needs more handle bar tape - i'll supply. so you can fit levers where you want them and then tape. and i'll cutting off the lock and taking off the kiddie chair clamp too.

Haven't really got room for any more bikes... however it's very tempting - is that frame definitely 56cmx56cm? It looks much smaller to me, though maybe I'm being dim. She's about 5'3 so if it's a 56 it's definitely too big. Anyway, let me have a think about it because it'd certainly be pretty easy to transfer the parts over.
(and no need to worry about bar tape and saddles and stuff - I can sort all that out. I'm only clueless when it comes to road bike gearing... have built up quite a few other bikes).

  • yes - you could sell on - or store - the frame - MTBs have smaller gearing if they're really off-road stuff but the XC bikes seem to have similar gears to tourers.

the high profile of an MTB tyre makes the actual circumference more similar to a road than you'd think.

    this is 56 square defo.

if she's that small a light alloy rigid fork mtb might be in order - to make a 26" wheel tourer (700c frames will only really go so small until all the geometry gets out of place)

look for thin rims, thumb levers and cantis (not v brakes) - you can run canits with road levers easier , run thinner c. 32mm tyres , pop the thumbies up on the bars near the stem - super cheap way of doing things - like this a bit

anyway let me know about the red bike? i need to shift it sooner rather than later. i only bought it for the saddle - and now i don't really like that.......
