Tourer sizing

Apologies if there's already a thread with something similar. i ride a 54/54 single speed (i'm 6 foot but like my bikes a bit on the small size), but heard that i should be looking at a slightly bigger frame for a tourer (probably an old Dawes). Any thoughts? or is this just an old wives tale?

Doesn't need to be any bigger on the leg length, but you'll be wanting a longer reach on it so as to be less strain on the back and arms.
