they didn't fit it properly, it was/could have been dangerous

When you left the wheel at the shop did it have a cog fitted?
What quality is the hub?
-
• #4
Yes cog and lock ring was fitted to the hub when left with them. Standard Langster hub no idea of maker Alex maybe? (not the best i know)

Explain to them what happened. You went for a ride and stripped the lockring thread because they hadn't tightened it properly. Ask them what they are prepared to do about the situation.
Also refer to hippy's post.

they would have had to take the cog off to build the wheel properly??
if so, it's their fault, go back and give 'em hell -

I just wanted to make sure it was the shop that took the cog/lockring off and not the OP.
If it was the later, then the OP could've fucked it. Since the OP hasn't touched the cog/lockring either removing or installing it's pretty clear it's the shop's fault. Speak to them.

Burn their Kids .. it can be an effective negotiating tactic.

I already had to take the wheel back once as the spokes were not tensioned properly and where pretty loose. The knob said "its fine and to stick a front brake on and dont skid" read into that what you will. After me saying to sort it out he finally did.

Its my local in Swansea.
Went in there today and as expected they shrugged their shoulders and denied all blame, said it was it dowm to being a shit hub.So it looks like i need to dig deep and buy a new one. Anyone recommend me anything? i'm on a tight budget for the next few months are the formula/on one hubs any good.

I've got formula hubs on my hack fixie. Their okay, the sealed cartridge bearings only last me about a year of daily use, but they only cost £6 a pair if you can fit them yourself, then they're good as new.

worked a treat for me, been riding formulas for 2-3 years and never had a problem.
From reading on here I've gathered they're the best hubs sub £100 / pair

Tell them that you will be taking out a small claims action against them. If this does not make them budge, then do it. 'tis not expensive to do.
You may want to to check with your local CAB as well.

yes
why not, at least you can walk away from it knowing you did what you could. I hate leaving things half-done

This shop is shit. Shit service, monkey mechanics.
Tell them so. Mention the name of your local trading standards officer, and what conversation you have just had with them. Have that conversation for real first.
Tell them you're telling us, here, on a forum with 15,000 members or whatever we have.
Tell them to supply you with a new hub, gratis, and then go a better shop and have them build the wheel. And get your money back.
Cunts.

^^^^
what he said
Right i had a rear wheel built friday buy a local shop using the original hub from my new bike which has only done about 10 miles and was stripped from the wheel by the shop. Used it today for the first time and as i was going up the hill outside my house the cog slipped, so off i got and pushed the bike back home, poped the wheel off and tightened the the lockring only to find it kept spinning. I took the ring off only to find the thread has stripped on the hub.
Obviously it was ok before i had taken it to the shop but i dont know what the fuck to say to them as they are more than likely going point the finger at me saying i fucked it up, but i dont want to be forking out to replace something i havent damaged myself. How would any of you approach them to try and get it sorted.
