Wanted: Reliable touring bike front+rear mech/shifters/wheels

If you don't mind my saying so, 531c is a very poor choice for a touring bike, unless your girlfriend is very light and doesn't carry much luggage.

I have a few bits that would sort this bike, though. Exage, Deore or LX, depending on how much you want to pay.

Don't worry - she is light and won't be carrying much weight - only intending light, relaxed touring with this - pottering around France for a week or so, weekends away, nothing too tough. I'd be carrying most of the weight - I built up my touring bike for the Himalayas so it's very tough (but more mtb style which is why I'm confused over gearing on this bike).
