New bike, New rider, flat tyre due to a spoke?

Posted on
  • Hi

I got a new bike from Evans Maurice Mongoose and whwn it arrived i couldnt pump tire up! already had a hole.

I removed innertube and found hole was on the inside of the innertube...hmmm I thought thats weird. So I looked and could not see where hole had been taht there was also a hole in the rim strip like a spoke had gone straight through it? is taht even possible?

I also noticed the hole in the wheel is a little scuffed and looks like someone has almost tried to get a screwdriver through that was too big.

am I getting punctures because the spoke is moving?? It feels solid, or is the pressure on the tube so high that the scuffed hole and potentially sharp edge of it is causing teh problem?

    any suggestions? thanks

  • Ok so I have removed the NEW flat innertube and the hole is again on the inside but in a different place! so not the spoke or scuffed hole.

I am putting 110psi in and everything says upto 120psi but again the whole in the rim strip and the tyre are perfect little round holes.

  • Is the inside the rim bare metal or Is it lined with tape?

  • bare metal and then the rubber rim tape(which also has a hole in it) the hole in the tube looks like... well like a cats bum hole :) or star ;)

  • Pics?

  • are there anymore holes in the rim tape apart from the hole for the valve?

is the hole you are talking about additional to the hole for the valve?

Yes I had this very problem when I tried run my wheel without rim tape, its tube going thought the holes! but this shouldn't happen if you've got rim tape, try replacing the tape with some cloth stuff?

there was a hole for the valve, and a hole in the rim tape where the puncture was, that hole wasnt there originally.

Picture to follow in a second

  • Once you've understood exactly what's wrong and why it's happening, take it back and let them replace the rim tape, the innertube and any possible fault with the rim itself at their expense.

To be fair to evans they have been pretty good, when it arrived flat they immediatley posted me 4! new pirelli inner tubes and a rim tape, but it seems like teh rim tape isnt strong enough? why would that be the case it is pirelli too... I dont get why it is happening but a better rim tape I guess would make sense, but does everyone have to do this? buy new bike get puncture every 5 miles..

  • Ok so just had a look at the bits and the rim tape(rubber) that came pre fitted seems like a cheap pos!

the continental tape they have sent out is a proper high pressure rim tape its almost a fabric! much more secure and thicker so I will fit that to both wheels. and contact them to find out why they think that saving a few pence on cheap rimtape is a good idea!

    Thanks all.

  • use cloth tape , rubber band are as false an economy as cheap bin bags

    • avoid pinching the tube when fitting, check inside tyre for anything still stuck in it.
  • Just run a few layers of electrical tape around. Rim tape is overrated.

  • not if you want to protect your rim.

  • Protect it from what? An inner tube? Your rims are fucking soft, Damo.

  • oh balki.

  • You can use both your rubber tapes if you are feeling parro.
The conti should be strong enough.

The crap one that came as standard is easy to pierce if its a bit tight when fitting, so probably happened by the taiwanese child that put your bike together, not the evens mechanic who took it out the box and turned the handlebars round.

  • Stustaff, a bit off topic but what's the build quality like on the Mongoose?

  • I guess its as solid as your going to get for just over £300 (I used code survey10 with evans to get 10% off)

only done 10 miole so far as in London at the mo but have had everything to bits and back together and everything seems great, nicely welded and apart from the orange paint on the rims starting to dust off a little under the break pads its been fine.

oh and add some decent rim tape of course ;)

  • Paint on rims will do that. All that friction. From the brakepads.

    Hahah. Exactly.

Damp rag will sort that out (for now)
