• Velocity Deep V's - How much should i be paying for a custom build?

I found this guy on the web www.longleafbicycles.com and have emailed him with questions etc. It looks like he has what i want.

Black Ando Deep V's with machined front wheels and white formula hub

I was just wondering how much this would cost in the UK? The total quote is $337 with shipping $377.

Is this a good / ok price? it works out at around £250

(i did utsf and found nothing along this line)

  • From a standard shop you'll probably get a quote of:

    Rims 80
Spokes 40 (bargain them down here unless they're using decent spokes and brass nipples)
    Build 40
    Hubs prob about 50

So roughly 210, give or take.

  • Try phone BL, condor, 14 bikes see what they say

  • cheer's i'll give a bell at the weekend and see what the deal is here.

I realise that Velocity Deep V rims are popular, but why exactly do you want those particular rims? If its for tricks, and bobbing down concrete drops and the like, then I understand. If you simply wanted black rims with a depth of near 30mm (like the Velocity Deep V) or maybe even deeper, then have a look at the Deep V Rims list/database.

If you live in America, then getting wheels from there makes good sense. Otherwise, if you live in the UK, or better yet, in London...then there's a whole lot of choice in the Wheelsets list/database.

I'm unsure of the added-value of an expensive custom build. For example, Paul at KiwiCycles will build you up a set of wheels that will stay true, even if you determinedly ride through deep potholes regularly, and weigh near 19stone/265lbs/120kgs. I know a guy who fits this description, he's here on this forum, and got some Rigida DP18 rims built by Paul, and they remained solid and true. Built onto your seemingly preferred Formula hubs.

But like others have recommended, there are other shops, and even individuals on here that would do a near unbeatable job for you (ie. dogsballs, hillbilly, arup). The world is your clam.

Oh yes, Using The Sucking Firch is well known to lead the best intentions astray.

  • its expensive and will cost more with customs.

formula's (same as zenith/iro/systemex/blb) cost £46 a pair (1), deep veeee's about £80 pair (?), spokes etc, so with a builder off here you could do sub £200 probably.

    yo.

and UTSF = use the search function, no?

  • I got my deep Vs from BLB and they were pretty expensive (£244) with orange spokes and black rims and black hub

starting to think orange spokes wasn't such a good idea

I think with plain spokes they were around the £210-220 mark

  • *the hubs were formula rebranded as blb just to let you know

  • well of course the orange spokes were not a good idea

    !

An example of mild, humour. Admittedly, not very obvious at first glance.

and UTSF = use the search function, no?

Humour bypass operation was clearly a total success.

  • i bought my rim for around £40 from blb, bought a formula hub for £20 off ebay and then payed evans to build the wheel for £35 which included spokes (silver or black) = £95 but i guess the rear wheel will be more because of the sprocket, but not by much more.
