Ever since I went back to 44/11 ratio, (previously 44/14)
I've been hearing a worrying noise every now and again.
It's like a "crunk" noise. Is the ratio causing stress to something? I feel as though it may be the crank arm.
I think I push too hard.
Ideas?

Hey Martin ^ ;)
I have a feeing this question has been asked before, and that you may have to utfs.. but hopefully someone will help you out.

lol @ link.
Yeah I just UTFS. Can't find anything.

I had a very annoying "crunk" which I could feel through the pedals a few months ago, took me ages to find out it was loose crank bolts! Always worth looking at.

Cheers dude, will inspect it in the morning.

sounds like it could be your lock ring. check all variables - lockring, crank bolts, chainring bolts, bb cups. can you feel it through the cranks rather than hear it? if so it's most likely the lock ring, and if you don't tighten it sharpish you may strip the threads on the hub.

Crikey I've been getting a clicking (about 3 per revolution) coming from my newly fitted bottom bracket, chain ring, chain and rear wheel. Thing is sometimes it clicks for a while and it's really loud but then I can go of somewhere and nail the bike for a few hours and it doesn't make a sound at all. I'm confused.

I'm guessing your front wheel is bolted up tight and the other three most common causes of clicks are getting themselves heard once each per revolution

Thanks for the link, I've had a quick root around and I'm worried that there could be a crack in the frame where the BB fits. Can this be repaired?

is it a "click" or like a rattle?
What what your reply have been if the answer was "rattle"? I've started getting loads of tiny clicks which I guess could be described as a rattle. Do I need to get that SPD tool and service them?

Ok, before I take everything apart I just want to check a few things.
Firstly Headset
Under heavy braking it seems to POP or Click just once, a sound that reverberates down the fork legs. Could this be due to a flattened bearing, or something more sinister. I have loosed the stem, and tighted the headset from the top. This sometimes remedies it momentarily but it always seems to come back
Any ideas?
Secondly Front Hub
Im pretty sure of the answer to this but ill ask anyway. The front wheel when spun off the ground, generates a considerable amount of vibration, the rim itself runs straight. But the vibration slows the wheel down fairly rapidly. Often as the wheel stops completely it almost sort of clicks into place. That is to say just as it seems to have stopped it moves an inch or so more (I hope that last bit makes sense.)
So anyway I have purchased a metric fuckton of 3/16" ball bearings, to replace. Is it likely that knackered bearings are at fault here.

I've read the several threads about this, but my question is, can you always see a crack in a steel frame? Can it be cracked under the paint so invisible to the eye? I've been trying to work out what a pinging noise is, and after changing out everything I could (pedals, BB, chainring & bolts, rear wheel, bars/stem..) I realised that if I push down on the TT it pings, then if I yank it up quickly by the TT it pings again. It sounds like a tiny pebble hitting the frame. Actually when riding it often sounds like the front tyre is throwing tiny pebbles at the downtube, and at worst it's almost a creak. Happens if I'm out of the saddle so ruled that one out.
I just can't see a crack anywhere. It's 531. Oh and I had a little head-on crash some time before I noticed the noise...

There's sometimes little bits of solder beads left inside the frame after welding, I believe. Try giving your frame a good shake, see if it pings. Either way, probably a good idea to get the bike to a shop that knows it's onions, get it checked out. You don't want a spectacular fail on a descent...

Don't concern yourself with pings.
It's Pengs you've got to worry about.
-
• #717
I was about to write Pingy on the TT but decided instead to clean the seatpost & inside the seat tube, and I'm pretty sure it's worked. Must've been the flex from the frame combined with a speck of dirt.

Good list!

^ It is a great list, I think it needs to be a sticky

Hi All,
It seems that my left ATAC pedal (alium) has developed an irritating click?! Has anyone had this issue before and if so how did you fix it?
They've only done a few hundred miles since new (bought off wiggle) so am surprised problems have arisen so soon.

at what point does it click?
-
• #722
when pedal is horizontal and crank is nearthe 6 o clock position.
-
• #723
Made sure your cleat is tight?
Try oiling the springs.
-
• #724
put a little oil between the pedal and the rubber washer on its axle as well, might have a bit of dirt in it.

There is a very good chance its not the pedal.
Check your crank bolts, seatclamp and saddle rail bolt(s). Check they are nice and tight. Also check their is no play in the BB, and you may as well check the chainring bolts as well. And to confirm, all your threads and tapers are apropriately greased with anti-seize?
If it is the actual pedal, and not any of the above or the clete, then its probably a warranty thing if its only been 2 months.
Just in case anyone digs this up in future with the same problem... You've probably threaded/broken the cleat plates in your shoes by over-tightening. Don't keep tightening expecting it to stop, because it won't.
