  • So my 9 month-old cat just slipped on the windowsill on the top floor of a two story house.
I'm assuming its about twenty feet high. Anyway, he's limping, indicating that he hurt his right-hind leg but is purring and otherwise seemingly fine, even playful.

I've had cats fall from greater heights and not even limp afterwards, maybe he needs to work on his technique :p

Its obviously not broken, otherwise he'd be yelping and unable to move so I'm not taking the little bugger to the vet unless it gets either worse tomorrow or doesn't improve over the next two/three days.

    Does that sound fair?

    starts making a mini parachute

  • Don't you have pet insurance? You shoould have.

    starts making a mini parachute

I have two a ginger tabby (4)and a devonshire rex (20months) and she is apesh*t...she fell about 20 ft and then a further ten once she had landed on a glass roof thingy beneath my window...and she was ok...shaken and pissed off she made an idiot of herself though other wise fine. He seems cool...he probably just landed funny and has twisted it a little, give it a squeeze around the leg in question, as you have said already he'd have squawked...

  • go ahead with the parachute but I'd wait till tomorrow and see if its better. if not, I'd take him to the vet. is his jaw ok? usually they hurt their jaws cause they lack strength to absorb the weight when landing

    itll be fine i think

  • Your cat could have a fracture or other potentially serious injury, I would take the cat to the vets for a general check-up... the vet will stretch out all the limbs and will make sure there's nothing wrong. It'll cost you about £40 in London, say you can't afford x-rays.

The cat may get better over time but in my opinion it's better to be safe than sorry. Unlike humans it's very difficult for a cat to complain to you about how painful it is to run around all day on a once-fractured leg, etc. I'd rather stump up £40 and make sure that your pet is going to be in the best physical condition it can be than save a bit of money and hope for the best.

My 2p... at the very least keep the cat indoors, well rested and keep a very close eye on the limp.

  • cats purr when they are in pain too. It releases endophines.

  • Cool, I just checked his jaw/teeth and nose and everything seems fine. Also gave the dodgy leg a rub and he didn't even flinch. Both rear paws are slightly grazed but not bleeding. Will keep him under observation.

    Thanks for ze replies!

  • When cats are in pain or scared they often purr and can go rigid... it will be difficult for you to diagnose the injury yourself, but in general yes, sounds not-so-bad.

  • shaken and pissed off she made an idiot of herself

    haha

  • keep an eye on him, and see if he hides. as far as I know, that means they're not feeling ok.

  • I think this place needs a Cat subforum

  • Off food, unusual behavior (hiding, urinating, etc), "mopey" disposition, no desire to go out/roaming, difficulty in holding their heads up, overly "needy", overly floppy/malleable when being handled, slow response when pushing blood from gums, overly dry/wet nose, sunken eyes, splitting nails, disinterest in playing, ears not moving very much to stimulous, etc...

  • He's currently curled up on his chair in the front room. I'm prodding him periodically to make sure he's alive. He's asleep but alive and seems "normal". No excessive purring, only the normal kind when stroked. I really don't think anythings broken but the missus is taking him to the rspca tomorrow anyway.

Allow £2,500 pins. I'll rustle something up in the workshop.

  • rapidly turning into icanhazcheeseburger...........

  • shit, i hope the little guy is ok

take him to the vet... just to be safe. you don't want him suffering unncessarily.

although, saying that i am always wary of vets and other professionals who seemingly write their own paychecks...

Rspca, seven sisters road... Plus we're students, so it shouldn't be an issue.

Thanks for the advice people, max will be at the vet tomorrow morning. Its actually quite handy, we've been meaning to get his second set of injections done for a while now...

This could be seen as a worrying pattern.

    Once, fifteen years ago.

    Insurance is a scam.

  • Your cat has a aerospok... Dibs if you split!
    :)

  • UPDATE. Mr Man has stopped limping. Looks like he was just a bit sore straight after the base-jump. If he's still not limping in the morning then I'll skip the vet. Although he still needs the second jabs to be fully out-door proof.

I'll 1+ on that, you'll never know, it might be broken and the cat is just trying to 'deal' with it, unlike us human who moan at the slightest paper cut.

  • You might want to consider getting better locks for your cat: a big d-lock round its neck and a mini-d for one of its back legs at a minimum. Ed can probably give you better advice than me.

  • Current cat has a pin in its leg from when it was pushed off the fourth floor balcony by her brother.

    A £2,500 pin.

    FFFFFUUUU.

What was that thing made of?
