  • Some advice for you,

If you ever find yourself riding in the snow, make sure you do NOT lean

    i failed at this

  • Just got in, preetyy slued, but laughed so much at this thread
This is best thread ever real fully through

  • Ha thanks Max I guess some of it is simple... seeing as that was one of the things that appealed to me about it.

Sharkstar im in Belper so have lots of hills nearbu but for my work ride I go down a little hill and then follow the a6 into derby as it runs mostly alongside the river its fairly flat with a couple of gradual rise and drops in there.

Ha, I'm from Ripley, youth. Ayup me duck.

I reckon you can get away with 70 gear inches fixed on that road, as long as you don't start wanting to head over to Heage too often.

  • Yeah me too, but I'm also really pissed yet I can type properly. Strange huh.

    Advice for the original poster:

Ride it like you stole it.

  • Ride it fixed!

Im from Heage originally and am only down the road(well down then up a pretty steep hill) from there now.

What does '70 gear inches' mean I thought it was all ratios?

  • google sheldon brown and gear inches.

If ou go fixed make sure the fixed cog and lock ring is on tight. They frequently don't come put on tight from the factory.

  • Thanks, will do.

whats needed chain tension wise on these?

  • Tight but not completely stretched. Spinny is good so I'd say 70 GI is a bit much.

  • google sheldon brown and gear inches.

ok the calculator gave meloads of info and gear inches being 72.5

  • I'm pretty much completely ignorant when it comes to fixed tricks, but I would have thought a lower gear would be better, no? Possibly somewhere around 60-65"

I dont knoew either that 72.5 was on the sinle speed if i switch the hub to fixed its 64.5.

however im not certain what either of those mean to actual riding yet.

  • stustaff

there is a lot of information here on gear inches, gear ratios etc

also many threads on fixed vs single speed etc

spend some time reading up, please don't ask each question you have here

  • tip number 3, don't ride with dangerous james

Apologies im new on here and didnt realise I wasnt allowed to ask a question where the answer could possibly be found somerwhere else.

its weird that most other people seemed quite happy to have a chat be friendly and answer a few questions that a newb had.

so maybe I'lljust carry on and you could maybe not answer if you dont want to and not click on this thread anymore seeing as your the only one complaining?

As i posted in my first post I have been reading up but a lot of things assumed a certain amount of knowledge so didnt make sense, hence me asking a few questions.

  • James got told.

    Fight!

    please pay attention to :

    • New people asking **questions that have been asked and answered **what feels like a hundred times already

its a minor matter of courtesy to not fill this place with the above

dude firstly i know how forums work aznd i know what a mess they can become if the same questions keep being posted as new topics.

however i have kept any questions in one clearly marked thread and asked them when i couldnt find an obvious answer for my question using the search function.

eg Chain tension brought up 20 separate topics on the subject I had a skim through and couldnt see an answer to my specific question so asked it in here instead of starting a brand new topic on it like numerous others have!

and someone answered it, job done.

Thats how forums work,, people helping each other out! if I were spamming loads of topics i could understand but Im not if you dont want to see some beginners questions then dont come in this topic surely its taht simple?

  • oh boy, you are going to be a welcome addition round here

  • oh boy, you are going to be a welcome addition round here

I have a friend who joined the forum a few months ago who is too shit scared to post a new thread. You can sort of see why.

  • Sacred of the internet?

  • oh boy, you are going to be a welcome addition round here

If the majority of people on here had your attitude then i wouldnt be here and you could chat to yourself all day.

but from reading for the last few days and the vast majority of actual replies in here that were useful or taking the pee(in a fun way) I think I will stick around.

I fully admit its hard in any forum to get that match of being able to have the existing group with their in jokes and meme's be approachable to new members, and not have new members bug them with their stupid(assuming you already know the answer) posts.

But give people a bit of slack as i said i have started 1 topic! its clearly labelled and people were having fun in here until you came along.

I think its pretty obvious its you who needs to adjust?

  • I'm sure DJ would happily chat to himself all day, so you're not really offering an alternative.

The questions you've raised have all been covered and answered before. Repeating them means, as you've found, that the answers get split up and spread across several threads. Out of all the responses, you've had one that wasn't positive and you chose to focus on that.

In fact, reading back, DJ was polite to you (for him at least) and explained why - by reading the threads and the information within it you will probably understand and comprehend the answers you get rather than relying on others.

Oh the wonders of the ignore button. Anyway, enjoy the new bike (and get some foot retention!)

  • i tried to be nice and give some advice re a better way to participate here

i love the way that these muptards make the assumption that all the answers to their questions ought to be in one thread so that they should not have to look for them

the problem is each one of these short sighted fuckwits dont realise that the next retard will come along and repeat the process, so we have a whole collection of these similar initial threads by people

the genius of this process is that none of these individuals can be fucking arsed to bother doing basic research, so each one starts a similar thread but sees that they are so special and important that all their questions deserve to be answered

there are millions of threads covering these matters, most of these questions dont need to be asked, or you could contribute or raise questions on relevant threads

  • Oh hai, seems this a thread about bicycles? Was wunderin if these were any gud? Dun a search and there was like 30 things to read. Mebbes you can help.
