  • i am 100% against city based allocation. We were asked for top 6 uk teams, end of.

    +1

ideally i would like the uk to select a few super teams and a few team teams (eg bad) and these teams get the fuck beaten out of them to prepare for the worlds.

I think team uk would have enough time to prepare.

    +1

uk tournament 1-month prior to the euros/worlds decides who gets to go. The best teams then compete, any teams can be formed for the quali-tourney.

    +1

  • yeah travel costs start increasing exponentially from 12 weeks out. this should be decided by mid-may latest

  • What about (if possible) doing a combination of these suggestions. We put together a round robin tournament for a small number of teams that are sent to the tourney after being picked by their city as the best from the city.

So if we do a tournament to find the top 6 teams perhaps we allow 10 teams or something.

We could also do the preliminary selection with all of us nominating the teams that we think should be able to play here online. I think we all have a good idea of which teams stand the best chance, regardless of which city we live in.

This also gives people a chance to say they want to play, big themselves up, and be put through by their peers. This means whether you actually play in the tourney or not you still have a say of who should represent the UK at the Worlds.

  • Also, didn't Kev's form ask for one member per team to fill out the form?

    +1

I didn't fill a form out on bikepolo.ca as Chan had done it for the team...

  • Also for the record, my main reasons for not wanting the UK Champs as sole decider for the Worlds are:

1: the format has been shoehorned to fit the time we have and the number of teams registered. I took over the organisation of the Champs AFTER it had been announced by Andy, i feel if the remit for the Champs was as a decider for the Worlds i would have placed more emphasis on a fairer seeding/tournament system, and also limited the number of teams... as it is i inherited something that had never been planned that way, the emphasis was just on actually getting the ball rolling in holding a National UK Champs.....

2: I know personally i'm not going to be completely focussed on Netto games because of everything else i'm going to have to do leading up to and on the day of the tourney, this obviously doesn't matter SO much if a place at the Worlds is not at stake....

So, if those 2 issues could be remedied i would have no problem in the UK Champs deciding the Worlds, i still think the results will be an important tool in making the final team selections for the Worlds...

    My 2¢

I think everyone is in agreement that Uk champs FORMAT is not the best way to determine the best six. No-one is doubting this... BUT what better option is there before April 30th?!

  • ooo poll?

  • ooo poll?

& a list. Do we actually have a list of interested teams yet or teams that will definitely be able to go. This would be a great place to start...

  • First come first serve list?

    1. Rotten Apples.
  • haha

    2. Los Coños

?? 75% of the voters think it is the best way

  • ?? 75% of the voters think it is the best way

Sorry I meant the format of the UK champs and the fact that our Uk allocation has been determined after UK champs was organised.

NOT that it isn't the best option with what is now available to us now!

  • Rotten Coños

    Urgh that has terrible connotations!

  • ...
Also, didn't Kev's form ask for one member per team to fill out the form?

    ...

No it didn't. And it wasn't Kev's form, it was just hosted on his website.

& a list. Do we actually have a list of interested teams yet or teams that will definitely be able to go. This would be a great place to start...

Yes, I have the list of UK 'expressed interest' forms. I didn't make up the numbers in my original post/proposition. Also you'll see in a later post of mine that there were several forms filled out without teams as there was an option of if you already have a team or not.(see my quotes below)
I was asked not to make this list public so I'm not going to post it on this public forum. And I'm waiting to hear back as what factors Berlin used to decide the allocations

    ...

Both of your teammates filled out a form with Netto as their team.

    ;1303737']...
Only London, MCR and Cambridge expressed interest.
    London filled out 20 forms
    Cambridge filled out 10 forms
    Manchester filled out 6 forms
    ...

Also you'll see that there was a 'definitely going' and 'maybe going' options as well as options of having a team already sorted or not...

;1303763']Broken down by teams who had a player fill out a form it's not much different:

    Teams
    • London – 10 (+ 3 players with no team listed)
    • Cambridge – 6
    • MCR – 3 (+2 players with no team listed)

MCR and Cambridge both had 2 'maybe' forms

I personally don't think polo is at a place where national allocations can happen.
(and I personally don't want to see it get structured that way)
We, as a global community kinda skipped over that and went straight to the big regional titles in continental championships and world championships.
North America have regional tournaments, the East Side Polo Invite, North Side Polo Invite, South East PI, Midwest Champeenships, Cascadia Triple Crown, etc. and as far as I know they play no part in deciding who goes to the NA's or Worlds. This will most likely change in the near future but it's not there yet.
Europe does not have these regional championships, we're still doing 'friendly' tournaments. The UK champs is the first of it's kind over here and I still think we should change the name to "Pasty English Speakers Championships" (not serious...kinda)

These are my reasons for not being keen on national allocations this year.

    Also:

HOWEVER, *if your team turns out unfortunate enough to have not made the cut in your home city*, DO NOT DESPAIR! Casual tournaments will be held Friday and Saturday night to accommodate enthusiasts of all skill levels. You will also be able to register and take advantage of the wealth of hospitality, guilt-free!

  • ;1306392']No it didn't. ...

Both of your teammates filled out a form with Netto as their team.

It said only one member per team needs to fill out the form...

  • Yea, you're right. I just went back to the page on LOBP, it did say that. But a lot of teams didn't adhere to that.

I think this sounds like a great idea.

But I don't think getting another UK - wide tournament in time would be likely.
Also, everyone knows that London teams would only vote for themselves. ;)

  • ;1306423']Yea, you're right. I just went back to the page on LOBP, it did say that. But a lot of teams didn't adhere to that.

How do the figures stand if you only count one vote per team?

If Manchester and Cambridge (maybe Oxford) were ok to travel to London for this we could put it together in no time. It's actually really an easy tourney to put together.
As Manchester don't want the UK's to be a qualifier, and we need to respect that, perhaps they'd be happy to travel to London.

As for the voting, that's easy to, we just get teams to nominate themselves if they want to and are able to go to the World's. Then everyone votes and can't vote for themselves. It's easy to check on the polls who voted for who.

  • Why should it be in London?

  • we just get teams to nominate themselves if they want to and are able to go to the World's. Then everyone votes and can't vote for themselves.

So it becomes a popularity contest, to see which teams get to compete for a spot. Such a bad idea!
We are trying to find the best teams, not the best looking/most popular teams.

    #(Malice/Malice)

  • the way this thread is progressing it seems to assume we should only allow teams from london, manchester, or cambridge to qualify because they were the only places that had players fill out forms on dotca. i really don't think that should be the case, and if it's not i don't wee why we would do this in london as opposed to somewhere further north

  • also, i'd like to point out that if we are going to use a separate tournament to decide this, it is likely going to have to be a one-day event, with travel on the day for many, and a limited number of games to determine who is best.

sorry i should really stop posting back to back and just start editing my posts
