Ped's vs Wheels

  • Now I'm not very bright....

    ...so can anyone explain how Westminster Council's policy of taking away barriers to stop ped's walking out into the street (e.g. outside Great Portland Street Station)... or flattening the height difference between roads and pavements so there's no kerb (e.g. Shaftsbury Ave) is going to result in less accidents between cars/bikes/m'bikes and peds/children/animals ???

    Or is it just me being thick?

  • It's stop segregation so people are forced to bear in mind other road/path users.

    Equal height road/path makes drivers/riders check their speed and keep an eye on peds.

    Think the reason is that cars drives more carefully when there's no barriers between them and peds. Also good for cyclists that can escape cars / lorries / buses rather than getting flattened

  • Apologies did a search couldn't find, thanks, thought that was the reason... of course only works if you're pretty perfectly sighted and not the worse for wear for a couple of sweet sherries!

    having been to Amsterdam last weekend, even though it can be a little confusing due to the lack of barrier, clear road sight (pavement and cycle lane look similar), but due to that I'm a lots more aware of my surrounding than I used to in London.
