  • Ok, so I am very new to the Fixie/Singlespeed scene so stay with me.

I bought an old Raleigh of Ebay the other day with the idea of using it for my first Fixed Gear project.

I am trying to work out if it is a 531 frame or not. It looks like a 531 but has no stickers on it to say that it is. It has a "Controlled Carbon Cycle Tubing" sticker on it. I tried to find out more about the bike on the net but found nothing. I am guessing it was a entry level road bike.

Is it a Reynolds frame or a cheaper Raleigh copy? The Bike is called a Raleigh Racer.
Can the rear wheel be converted into a fixed gear?

Any help or directions on what to upgrade first would be greatly appreciated.

    Peeps Master.

  • It's not 531 or any Reynolds tubing just cheap Hi-Ten, it'll be ok though. You can suicide the rear wheel...

  • Its not Reynolds.
The rear wheel can't safely be made fixed.

  • disagree^
it looks like a single front chainring, the problem would be spacing the cogs when the cassette is ripped off. May be possible to get a bmx freewheel on there, or other solutions,
many people here would also simply say, its a fairly low grade frame, not very strong, dont bother.
my advice is if you really want to learn read Sheldon, talk to real living breathing mechanics, get to know your shops, and try stuff, get it checked before riding, for there is nothing better than the experience of doing it yourself.

  • He asked if it could be made fixed, it can't.
It can be made single speed. But I can't see from the pictures if its cassette or block. The former would be easy to make single speed, the latter can't be done so easily or successfully.

  • anything is possible.

  • anything is possible.

    I'm sorry but thats bollocks.
What you are saying is the kind of ill-thought out stupidity that gets inexperienced riders riding death traps with potentially fatal consequences.

Its not funny and its not kool.
If you want to suicide your own hub thats fine, but don't go suggesting it to other people, especially those who profess their inexperience. Don't suggest it sarcastically and don't suggest it for real.

  • Its not Reynolds.

    oh that's tragic :-(

  • if you can fix something, space it, get the chain tension on it correct, and it runs
then whos to say whats right or wrong? he may have even learnt something.
not telling him to ride it full speed down Park Lane am I ffs.

Its wrong if you suggest its possible to safely turn that wheel into a fixed gear one.
Thats wrong because you aren't warning him of its potentially fatal consequences or taking any responsibility for your comments.

This isn't a Philosophical debate about right and wrong or ethics its about making a safe bike and taking responsibility for what you say.

    +1

Fact, not opinion. Needs a new rear hub, or whole new rear wheel, to be a safe fixed. Suicide conversion for the rear wheel would only be okay if both brakes were left on the bike.

  • o.k sorry, my mistake, not that wheel. reading fail.pedantry fail.carry on.

Frame looks pretty clean, are the wheels 27" with steel rims? Reminds me of my first road bike.
