Spider only scuffs the chainstay by 2mm max. It's a pretty standard Shimano 107mm.
It is asymetric yes, but I though the idea of that was to give a lil extra clearance driveside - this one gives extra clearance non drive side.Nope, it's designed for a double/triple chainring setup. It is designed like this to bring the chainrings closer to the frame, giving a better chainline and Q Factor.

on cheap shimano bbs the cups come off so this wouldn't be a problem.
er, no they don't?
the only bb's that i know of where the cups come off are the micheand phil

Hmmmm...that certainly would seem to negate my memories of cheap shimano BBs, perhaps I am thinking of an even cheaper cartridge BB...
Is this one cheaper?
I had one with one plastic cup and one metal cup which looked stuck on (not one-piece with the body like your pic), and they would both slip off if you asked them nicely...perhaps it wasn't shimano... -

measure your bb shell end to end.
then check the length written on the actuall bb cartridge.
they the same? they should be.
if they are and your spider still
if you have enough length on the axle, why not try a spacer on the drive side. you can probably get one free from your lbs, it'll shift every thing over a wee bit.

Yes, has been mentioned but I was really going for the stripped back track look! Any other suggestions?
