• I agree with most of the article, but am not sure that the IAM should be encouraging cyclists to remain 0.5 metres from the curb if they are not approaching a junction. Staying this close to the curb encourages drivers to overtake when it is not safe to do so.
    I think that's more of a "don't cycle too close to the curb" than a "get in your place in the gutter" comment. They do advise taking the secondary position on a "straight stretch of road which is clear of junctions and parked cars". Obviously other hazards should be taken into account; I often move out into the centre of the lane to stop people overtaking on blind corners etc.
