I think that's sensible advice. I think the point is to reduce the chances a driver may feel he has to "just nip around" you etc. If you're hugging the kerb, some drivers will chance it - putting you at risk. If you're blatantly in the way, they're much more likely to simply hang back. Once you're out of the situation, move back over to the kerb - I don't think many drivers would get p!ssed off with that?
