Personal taste innit. I'm not a fan of using a MTN frame on the road, but lots of folk do.
Could look into getting a crosscheck built up, to a light spec at BC. Personaly I'd rather have a steel frame CX bike if I was taking it onto light trails anyway. Again personal taste though. My alu CX frame is pretty uncomfortable on rough ground. But its not of the same quality as the Kona. Also armchair wisdom says that scandium enriched frames are more compliant than straight alu.
