for £1,000 and the duties you have detailed I think you'd find it hard to do better than the (grits teeth) halfords supplied boardman team carbon
Good call - plus it's black and goes with anything

For the extra £100, my money would be on the Planet X ultegra. Smashing groupset...

upgrade it over time

Boardman Road Team Carbon, nuff said.
AMAZING spec for the money. The one Nicole Cooke rides (Road Pro Race Prepared) had to be weighed down to be UCI legal, 14.5 lbs i think it was. That's 3 grand rrp, with about 5 grands worth of kit. That's the kind of value for money you get with Boardman.
+1
SRAM FTW
Campag sux!

CAAD9 is the best frame at that price, but you'll have Tiagra (eww) until you upgrade... Otherwise its cheap carbon
I think last year CAAD9 with 105 was £999 but they increased the prices for the '10 models..

are you kidding? The CAAD9 is Aluminum.
The SRAM Boardman Team Groupset is better than Tiagra and the Aluminium version of that is £200 cheaper.
Cannondale is overpriced.

The Boardman team, is not the same frame as the pro. It is made from a slightly lower grade carbon for a start. Porbably as least as good as the competition at the price point anyway though.
All the usual carbo suspects have been mentioned, plus there are a couple more.

All these are apparantly give a lot of 'bang for your buck'. They also have quite varied geometry, so just it should be a case of picking the one with the best fit. The Ribble Nero RC with a dedacciai frame, full Campag Veloce, and Khamsin wheels, (which won an award from Triathlon Plus) would be my personal choice
If you can stretch to around £400 more you can start thinking about the versatile world of titanum.

You clearly know nothing about road bikes. If you did you'd know that the CAAD9 consistently outperforms cheap carbon frames and is probably the best aluminium frame available today. For the money it offers excellent value.
As for SRAM being better than Campag, wouldn't it be better for Eightball to pick the groupset that he likes best, based on the shift levers, rather than come out with childish statements like the above? All three manufacturers offer very good kit for decent prices.

Even this is difficult to judge without a bundle of miles in the saddle and the experience of all the different hand positions. I find new Campag to be fine in the drops but achy when on the hoods. For a newcomer I'd normally always recommend people to Shimano, it's middle of the road, quality kit but for £1k budget I'd say get the SRAM on the Boardman, it truly is a great entry level bike.
I did hear whispers about rear triangle alignment not being quite right on those Boardmans so you may want to get your micrometer and plumb line out and have a gander.

Seem to be a lot of comments online about spoke nipples dropping into the rims on those Boardman bikes?

Look at the finishing on this one. Nice bubbles.
oh and a crack in it too on delivery
Cable stop ripping out
His 3rd replacement frame was set up with crossed cables too.

Was reading a 'best bang for your buck frameset' thread on weight weenies yesterday. The CAAD9 came up more than a couple times, as did the Cervelo S1.
For a complete bike, at the price range mentioned, I'd still be tempted by the Ribble dedacciai offerings though (or the Sabbath if I'm honest).

The only potential drawback of going down the Ribble route is their resale value should you decide the bike is not for you. Brand snobbery at play I think.

I'm more of the opinion that having say a Scuro RS, with Ribble decals, shows that you are a shrewd customer.
But, I cant imagine it getting so many hits on EBay as a lower end Spesh. So I get your point.
Ribble Evo Pro Carbon (2010), available from June, and comes with Campagnolo Centaur bits for £999.
