diable has sorted it out. Thanks for your help everyone and well done that man.
The previous owners had disconnected the big oven switch, presumably to stop people being zapped on the semi-exposed oven cabling. Of course, they failed to mention this to us.
Anyway, if you need some electrical work done he's your man.
