  • Yes, almost a whole 4cm. Not exactly an ideal solution.

2cm more and you're at the NY Standard. If I'm going to compromise on length, I may as well try to make up for it in strength (if I can stand the extra weight).

  • although it nice to have an extra couple cm to able to lock it in more places, it still have more leverage room than the old Evo Mini.

netherless I'm still sticking to my Evo Mini and Fah Mini.

Something I obviously wouldn't suggest, at the bottom of this post in the insurance thread. A stupid fiction?

  • How much is the Kryptonite fahg?

  • Just choose an insurance company that required a certain type of lock, says "u-lock above £35".

  • How much is the Kryptonite fahg?

    Cheapest prices I could find:

Kryptonite New York Fahgettaboudit® Lock (also known as the "Fagh Mini")

Parker International £55.25 (free delivery, tick box during checkout) - Support the little guy!

Kryptonite New York Lock® STD (Also known as the "3000", or "NY Standard")

    Parker International £49.10 (free delivery)

(if no stock, worth trying amazon, they've had some very good prices on the Fahg recently - £44.90).

Again, do try to support Parker, the longer they're around the better.

Any idea which companies do this? If you can recommend one, the insurance thread would love to hear.

  • General Fahg question: has any recent buyer noticed any difference with the 2010 model? Anything at all? Minor improvements? Different font sizes? ...

  • BTW maybe it would help if we start using the locks proper names, i.e. New York Lock 3000, instead of Fahgettaboudit Standard, which doesn't exist, etc etc...

  • BTW maybe it would help if we start using the locks proper names, i.e. New York Lock 3000, instead of Fahgettaboudit Standard, which doesn't exist, etc etc...

Quite right. The current correct name is the "New York Lock® STD" (or "Standard").

Of course the Fahgettaboudit Mini isn't called the "Fahgettaboudit Mini" either, it's the "New York Fahgettaboudit® Lock", not a Mini in sight.

    I'll make amends.

  • Any opinions on this: http://www.bikeradar.com/gear/category/accessories/locks/product/granit-chain-110-16378

Hobo, stick that lock on "Ignore". ;)

At only 10mm chain link diameters, it absolutely CANNOT compare to the chains already in the list on page 1.

  • Ok enough about locks & insurance. I'll leave that to the insurance thread.

GA2G, if I might ask, perhaps you can add a caveat to the front page? Something like "These are the best, but for better or worst, to comply with common UK insurance policies indicated locks should be combined with a Sold Secure approved lock". Or just note which are Sold Secure, without condoning the insurers' preferences. It would be pretty rubbish to be recommended an expensive lock, and only later realise that it invalidated your policy.

A very good point Morgan. But even though we are called L(ondon)FGSS, many of our readers/lurkers/forumengers are not from the UK, or don't reside here....so our insurance issues are only a local concern.

But it is certainly a good idea to add either SoldSecureGold or ThatchamApproved next to the different locks.

Anybody want to do the research for that then post it on here? I'll then amend the list, giving credit to the poster for the work involved. As its not my idea, I'd let someone else be responsible for that. I would only publish the info. Anyone up for that, please let me know.

  • Anybody want to do the research for that then post it on here?

I'll have a go, see what I can pull together.

Good news on the insurance thread RE. Kryptonite: hope is not lost, the Fagh is coming! And apparently Evans Cycles will honour the Evo Mini on their insurance, even if it is no longer rated by Sold Secure (partly perhaps because they are still mis-selling it on their website as Silver Sold Secure .. email sent). Once Sold Secure always Sold Secure? Maybe others will do likewise.

  • P.S. Amazon just dropped the price for the [ame="http://www.amazon.co.uk/Kryptonite-York-Fahgettaboudit-Mini-Lock/dp/B000OZ9VLU/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=sports&qid=1268854175&sr=8-2"]Fahgettaboudit® Lock ("Mini") : now £44.90[/ame]

They really don't like Parker International.

[Edit] Price has gone back up again, Parker equivalent. Keep an eye out ...

  • Good spot morgan_, but I don't normally list Amazon or eBay, as essentially they are companies that represent individual sellers. Still, anyone looking for a real bargain, has just learnt from you.

  • Agreed (a few days ago it was listed as supplied by Amazon themselves, today by "FoldingBikeHut" - 479 ratings, 4.8 out of 5 rating), but I'll make an exception at this price.

Someone clearing stock for the 2010 model? (If there's any difference).

  • Good news, and bad I'm afraid. One lady locked up her bike with an ABUS Granit, and it wasn't stolen, though others around hers were. Hers was damaged in frustration by the thieves.

My studio is just behind Angel station and yesterday there was a bunch of bike thefts.

I saw at least 4 cut locks, 2 of which are hanging on the railings at the junction of City Road and St Johns st and Pentonville road. My girlfriends bike got seriously fucked up too, front wheel completely bent and also the rear stays, the thief had obviously tried to rip the bike of the rack, gotten frustrated and given it a good kicking. (it was locked up with a Abus Granit). Most of the cut locks were cheap flex type.

Just thought i should give a heads up to everyone out there.

  • ^^ Heard about that today... there are some real cunts out there.

  • +

these two are such a good team in berlin.

  • ^ YES! Haha!

  • hehe.

mind that i was merely pointing out that the evolution minis are just the perfect size for fitting those bollards and a frame, on the other hand the bollard's ring on top is just wide enough.
so you don't really need to carry a bigger (heavier) lock in general, because these bollards are like everywhere.

for long term parking / over night people here always take their bikes inside their / their friend's room / work / whatever.
still, i think over here, hardly as much bikes as in london are beeing stolen, they are beeing trashed (and cannibalised) very quickly though.

  • BTW maybe it would help if we start using the locks proper names,

Dumb question ... is the Kryptonite New York M-18 listed under 18mm/19mm on p.1, the same as the "New York Lock® LS" on Kryptonite's site?

    Parker (http://www.parker-international.co.uk/6771/Kryptonite-New-York-M18-Lock.html) and SJS
    (http://www.sjscycles.co.uk/product-Kryptonite-Kryptonite-New-York-M18-WL-D-Lock-15202.htm)
make reference to "18 mm hardened Kryptonium steel shackle" for the M18. But a search at Chain Reaction on M18 returns
    (http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?PartnerID=79&ModelID=28854)
with an indication of "16mm hardened MAX-Performance steel shackle" (presumably sourced from the text) on Kryptonite's site for the "LS"

Is the M18 perhaps an older, but more secure (?) (18mm>16mm), version of the LS?

  • They list it under powersport vehicle protection.

    D'oh. Sorry.
