To answer my own question, took the canal on the way back, level with the metro stop - the one before you get to the Hawthornes. Going from town you have the choice to ride out on the left or the right - the right hand side is clear and wide, the left is muddy and narrow. My biggest problem was not knowing the canals in brum and circling town a couple times trying to get out.
