It's not strictly instrumental, but Slowdive's Pygmalion is ambient and lush, by 90's indie standards.
This was released at the same time Blur and Oasis were slugging it out for the number one spot with two absolutely horseshit songs.

A bunch of my northern mates went to an epic Cluster gig the other day at Sunderland Swimming Pool - did you hear about it?
It was in the pool with underwater speakers as well as overwater ones, with all these little grubby noise/drone kids swimming around in their speedos and bikinis listening to Cluster solemnly performing on diving boards!
