It's not strictly instrumental, but Slowdive's Pygmalion is ambient and lush, by 90's indie standards.
This was released at the same time Blur and Oasis were slugging it out for the number one spot with two absolutely horseshit songs.
on a similar note.

great thread!
mogwi, god speed, a silver MT zion are all favorites (a silver MT zion memorial orchestra and tra la la band is one of my top five albums of all time)
but if you like a slightly more orchestral feel then check out max richter http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8rluU6BGpKw&feature=fvw
(sound track to waltz with bashir)also the cinematic orchestra do a mostly voclaless jazzy set. this track has voclas but is a classic http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ed9CYDt99tA&feature=related
also lots of good fucked up electronica out there without vocals...

CLUSTER:
A bunch of my northern mates went to an epic Cluster gig the other day at Sunderland Swimming Pool - did you hear about it?
It was in the pool with underwater speakers as well as overwater ones, with all these little grubby noise/drone kids swimming around in their speedos and bikinis listening to Cluster solemnly performing on diving boards!

Greatest instrumental of all time... Bar none...
