I used to get terrible neck pains until very recently when I had physiotherapy. The pain and the tightness of the muscles themselves meant I couldn't even move my head. The physio swiftly pinpointed it to a posture problem and through a combo of physio-informed exercises, hot showers with the water directed at the neck and shoulders, sitting up properly and sleeping with only 1 thinnish pillow, the pains have gone. Oh and a bit of good ol' HTFU which has already been mentioned :P As much as it may hurt though keep the muscles moving, very important.
