Atlantis in Moseley has Hummus on the menu board but they never have it either.

Apparently the drugs industry is booming. Both pharmaceutical and recreational.

the ladies at the 50p baguette shop don't sell hummus anymore. the worse thing is they deny they've ever sold it because they've never heard of 'this hummus stuff' i speak of, even though I've had some from there before xmas?!
definitely one for the bham imploding thread.
50p baguette shop = urggghh
Best simple sandwich shop in town is "yum yum" it is near that little arcade where there is a greggs. They use a freshly baked hot baguette for the sandwich which is quite frankly delicious and not at all jawbreaking.
£2 for baguette, piece of fruit, cup of tea and some oreos/packet of crisps. Totally independent too, dont see how they do it.

Why would you want to get hummus from a chip shop?
But I would expect them to have it too, considering they are an overpriced "boutique" Mediterranean chip shop.

Its full of greeks innit! I often have a hankering for a hummus kebab with chilli sauce, and i assumed that their home made hummus must be good. Alas it seems not to exist.

Home made humus is good. It is also dead easy to make yourself.
The hardest/longest part is soaking dry chick peas for a couple days then having to boil them for at least an hour.
the most common and recognisable sort involves tahini, olive oil, garlic, and lemon juice.

They're coming to Dudley on April 4th eh? I guarantee that will end badly..

only need soaking for 24hrs!
i'd say getting a blender is the biggest PITA, especially if you have severely limited kitchen space wouldnt use a blender for anything else

What about one of the little hand blenders? Cheap and pretty versatile.

Sure it says 12-24hrs on the packet. But whenever I have tried it that way the needed boiling for 2 hours.
Soaking for longer saves cooking time/energy/panda bears.

sounds like a lot of effort for something you can buy in a little plastic pot for about a quid in tesco

C'mon man, it is one of the easiest & cheapest staple foods you can make. If you are a vegetarian humous is pretty damn indispensable. (I am not veggie though)
The stuff in the shop is made from watery runny tinned chick peas, cheap oil and is generally quite dull.
If you make it at home, you can use dry chick peas which are massively superior in both taste & nutrients. Plus you can use good olive oil & tahina, and put fun things in it.
You can also make the other sorts of humous which more closely resemble a chick pea curry which you do not see in the shops.

you could say that about making decent tea in a pot, or putting decent coffee through an espresso machine with the right knowledge and understanding, or making your own bread, or doing anything that results in better quality as opposed to more convenience.
and a quid for 200ish grams of hummous is a rip-off - DIY hummous costs about 20p for the same amount

It wasn't an entirely serious comment,
I'm just lazy and I don't like hummous.

don't know if this is old news but I found out today Tempest- Birminghams finest independent record store is closing down in a few weeks.
Tempest RIP.
Has anyone seen anything good come out of these closures? that aint rhetorical, i am genuinely asking. theres what used to be virgin records across the street and became some entertainment place, now its empty. huge building, on a super busy street in bham city centre, empty.

despite its political vibe, theres kinda a little section on birmingham:

Arggh. should just downsize and focus on more merch/limited edition type stuff.
If there is a place for a physical format record store, it has to include places like tempest surely?
In kings heath, I think Polar Bear is still there. But the cool camera shop is not.

I remember there was a BBC film based in birmingham a few months ago depicting some sort of apocalyptic future.
Does anybody remember what it was called? I forgot to watch it.

no idea what it was called, but it sounds good.
record shops in brum have always disappointed me and i can't think why. london is obviously good, but also manchester is way better than brum and even smaller places like brighton have at least a couple of good places...

The guy in Tempest said they were closing down because people have changed the way the way they buy music. I'm guilty of this, six or seven years ago I'd be in there everyday and buy a couple of CDs every week, usually based on they're recommendations but now I just buy from the net cos its cheaper and I can do it late at night when I'm drunk! Tempest was a real landmark though, before the internetz it seemed like it was the only place in the city to get good music!
The whole oasis market/virgin records/academy/argos block will be knocked down in a year or so to be replaced by martineau galleries, designed to link up with the new city park and eastside which is why a lot of it is empty, theres a page on the birmingham.gov.uk with artists impressions.
