The pub on that street gets good reviews so I reckon you're on a winner. You wouldn't want to do the whole distance without a rest and refuel stop in the middle. I mean, that'd be totally crazy and we're not in the business of taking risks with our lives!

  • I'm so high they call me your highness and if you don't know me then pardon my shyness...

Most people braking chains have either incorrectly installed them or if on geared bikess are riding around in the granny ring with the chain on the smallest cassette cog or visa versa.

that's what i thought, 92ft is a fair distance without any stops, especially on a fixiefixiefixie with a brakless on the front and back

Pah, I rode a full 85ft the other day without anything to drink or any spare parts incase of failure...

had to push it most of the way though

  • I have managed to break freewheels, axles, and crankarms but never a chain. I currently use KMC 8 speed half silver on all my bikes (fixed, SS, MTB< and I'm ashamed to admit> geared) with no problem at all. I use these with using the supplied quick link. (Chain £5 from Parker international)
A decent chin correctly aligned and not totally shagged should be beyond human breakage.

But there will always be the odd exception of course.

  • I've managed to break a chain, it slipped off and got bend when it got trapped between the wheel and the axle. This was after 14 months without oiling or any kind of a care taken to it.

Even if you are a mechanical numpty (like me) your chain shouldn't break. Unless you buy a sub £200 bike in which case you get what you pay for.

(I have also has a chain snap at polo, that may have been after several bad crashes or after I changed a link I can't remeber)

  • Its a smallish thing but what do we reckon are the best chains for £10, £20 and £30..?

  • I went for the SRAM PC1, seems good to me and under £10, not used it in anger yet, still in the middle of building. Put it on to check the chainline, and rode around the block a couple of times.

  • ask Gerald Ratner.

  • Hippy on here had a very good chain going the other week for £10 see if he still has it

  • Silver Izumi for mid price range.

Don't buy this one, I did and regretted it! Its so loud and deposits this silver shit on the teeth of your cog and chaining... SRAM pc1 all the way!
