You want real proof that the fixed-gear apocalypse is coming?
This.
Robert Pattinson, sparkling vampire heartthrob to every girl under 16 or an IQ of 80, riding a brakeless track bike in his new film. Apparently he's rebelling against his lawyer father. It's nice to know we're riding the 2010's version of Brando's Triumph in terms of rebellious transport, right?
Whilst I don't have much time for him, nor do I have much time for co-opting fixed gear bikes to make a character seem 'edgy' (it's got to be terrible charaterisation if you've got to rely on props, right?) or a brand to seem 'relevant' (fuck you, Umbro), I think this film might bring it back in the final scene.
Spoliers, if you even give a shit.
“Though viewers are led to believe that the movie is set in the present day, it’s actually set in 2001. In the final moments of the film, Robert Pattinson’s character has a fight with his girlfriend, played by Emilie de Ravin. He leaves to go to his father’s office and when he arrives, he rides the elevator up to the 92nd-floor. As he waits for his father, he looks out the window and helpleslly watches American Airlines Flight 11 hit the building and dies in what is now known as 9/11.”
