  • Hey,

So bit of advice, any thoughts on fitting the 2010 Charge Plug wih those Cranks Bros Egg Beater pedals?

Upsides - Keeps the minimal asthetic of the Charge, any possible downsides?

    Any advice gratefully revceived

    Baz

  • Do you really need to ask that?

read here, and forget about how the bike will look as long it'll function how you want it to ride.

  • Ed is right, check out the threads on Egg Beaters on here as well for some practical advice, if you are that set on them.
    Search is your friend

  • if you get a proper eggbeaters you might beat yourself up if you do not want to wear your bike shoes sometimes (like going to a party for example or going to the park in summer)

If you do get clips there are some which are one side clip one side normal pedal or combi ones. Ugly but who cares.

  • Anyone know what the widest tire is that will fit on the wheels that come with the freestyler?
I am trying to find out that rims they are, they must be alex something...!

  • ive seen 38c specialized tyres on one before

    *had an aftermarket fork though

  • I have the 14 fork on the bike so that should be fine, did you know if the tire rolled off at all?

  • That respray looks amazing.

As for the comments above along the lines of:

"Basically I don't believe that the public, that commuters, people that don't know about bikes in depth or whatever else you should want to call them should be exploited (over-statement I know) and that manufacturers should build good bikes at all price points, and sale assistants should give better advise. I want a better world, where bicycle owners don't pay unnecessarily down the line."

... are helpful, there's quite a closed attitude to giving this advice to the people who need it. I've been reading through this site for days trying to get some insights like in this thread but it's not always easy to find.

Have you measured the internal rim width as that would give you a clue?

  • Got my plug through RTW and its pretty good. I dont like the half-link chain and the wheels are shite so I'm replacing it piece by piece. Also rust is a bit problem for a lot of the components, I dry it off each time I bring it in

    Done:
New zaffiro vittorias to replace the massive stock tyres
re-gripped bull-horns, considered new bars but I like the width, good for climbs (of which there are many in brighton) and made sure I covered the 'Charge' decals on the bars
New saddle (although the spoon is good VFM)
Covered most decals with stickers and leccy tape

    Planning to:
Build new wheels (got some built for my custom build and weighed them both, each wheel was 800 grams lighter than the charge ones)
    Replace stem

    But all in good time.

Basically this bike is the workhorse and will carry me to work come rain or shine. I can chain it up in the middle of town and not constantly worry about it getting nicked/scratched which I wouldnt be able to do with my custom.

Example: A work colleauge chained his halfords MTB next to the charge the other day and scratched the down tube. My reaction wasnt to go in and instantly kill him to death because these things happen and its only a charge ;)

So in conclusion, more power to charge owners!

  • Hey,

Thanks Julian... I thought of that, bought some 661 Filters to avoid that... to the undiscerning eye they just look like slightly "special" snakers.

Special bad rather than special good.

  • My charge racer, isn't really a charge racer anymore. I've changed every component bar the frame-set, and head-set.

Having said that, i was really pretty impressed with the racer when i first got it. Brake levers weren't great, but they are on my gf's bike, and have done her ok for over 6 months. Wheels were very heavy, but solid as fuck (threads weren't great though). It came with a kmc normal linked chain, sugino messengers, charge spoon, formula sealed hubs, sugino sealed bb, sealed head-set. Fairly decent seatpost and clamp, ok bars and stem combo that i never used, and shit tyres. But all in all, i thought the components were well worth the money.
The average commuter would be able ride a standard plug for a few years without changing any components at all.

Now that my plug is all done up, it's lightish, good looking imo, and great fun to ride - almost more fun to ride than my fully custom, ruthlessly expensive steed.

    +1

£s per mile vs £s per steez

    The debate continues

  • Hi all,

New forum member so go easy..
I've just bought a 2009 Plug Freestyler and its come basically unassembled in the box. This is an embarrassing question, but here goes!

Basically I've got round to putting the stem on the headset, but the headset is covered round in cardboard. It looks so neat, almost as if its meant to stay on there, I had a poke under the cardboard and it seemed pretty hollow beneath so I've left well alone just in case.

Question is should i peel off the cardboard round the headset in order to get the stem on?

Thanks in advance for your help, sorry for the question, obviously it doesn't feel right that cardboard should be part of the bike, but you never know!

    Cheers

    Hamish

  • I am pretty sure every bike I have had does not have cardboard under the stem!
Chuck a photo up and we can see. My one does not have any I am sure.

  • Here's the picture. I would just rip it off but i have a tendency of rushing into things!

  • I was being the ultimate numpty, apologies. Haven't properly had a bike of my own since my BMX was stolen years ago!! Sorry for the time wasting.

  • Cardboard not part of the bike.

Its just there to stop the spacers rattling about in transit.

Undo the nut in the steerer cap thing, take off the cardboard. Pop the stem on the steerer, line it up, pop the cap back on and tighten it down just a little, then tighten up the stem bolts, then back off the cap such that it just tight enough to stay on.

The cap is just to clamp the stem down whilst you are doing up the stem bolts.

    Think the above is correct.

  • Yep figured it out rougly 2 mins after posting! Thanks for your help though.

  • awwwwwwww post of the day hamish :) in a nice way.

  • Worst first post more like, I'll wiser in time.. I hope.

  • Dont blame yourself, your being treated nicely for such a retarded post.!

  • True, bike's done now, apart from air in the tyres.

  • True, bike's done now, apart from air in the tyres.

Ahh... you're meant to put air in them, I thought the ride was a bit rough.

  • Yeah, I had to ask on another forum to figure that one out!
