Short grip?

Posted on
  • I'm going to cut my flat bar but want to be able to fit some grips on it. Seems the standard size is about 130mm for grips... would need to find a model that is about 100-110mm long, any suggestions?

    Thanks!

  • what like cut the grip!? going for lock on grips like the ODI ruffian... just need a shorter version!

  • You can buy shorter lock-ons designed for use with gripshift. They is mighty short though.

  • Thanks for that.
Actually looking for some white ones... I guess all I need to do is list all the models that are decent (ODI ruffian like) and look at the specs and see if one is tiny bit shorter... mine are exactly 130mm and even 120mm would make a small difference (can already cut 10mm on each side so could cut 20mm each side which would make a 40mm total difference which would be perfect I think.
Was looking at the charge sponge as well but the reviews are bad and apparently they are too thick..

  • The ODI gripshift models are only 90mm long, which is probs too short. ODI Roggues come in lots of colours except white.

Element (gripshift version) are 80mm, which is definitly too short.

FWIW I have some Lizard skin Charger lock-on grips which I like alot (in white infact). These are 130mm long, which is about standard.

I'd advise against cutting your bars so short you cant fit your hands on ;)

  • Beware of cutting your bars too short - just think of the analogy with the cat, whiskers and tight spaces.

  • I'm not cutting too short. They are raiser bars with witdh of 520mm! so just trying to cut 20mm on each side! It's just that after my drop bars that were 44cm it feels quite large that's all!

thx for your tips, I wish the standard size was 120mm for grips that would make my life easier. Not sure it's worth chopping the bar for half inch on each side!?

If anyone find some decent white lock on grips around 120mm I'd be happy to find out about them!?

    thanks guys..

since we're talking about bars, I have a spare alloy flat bar which is ~500mm, no brand but light and shinny, are they worth anything??

I was about to 'Flame-on' earlier TBH. But then the afternoon sun came out, turned my lab into a solvent filled sauna, and I lost the will.

Not that I want to ruin the mistique. But I've just been puching the questions into google FFS.

  • hey
    thx
i googled it too before posting this! as you can see the results are not great.. none of them are white and i actually dont need a 80mm... I think I might have to stay with my long and ugly raiser bar... :-(

  • Use bar tape - then you can have whatever width you want, whatever colour you want and you can wrap down the rise and onto the centre section, which gives you an extra hand position which is nice if it's very windy.

    +1
I've done this on some flat bars. Add some bar gel if you want a chunkier grip.

  • They are raiser bars with witdh of 520mm!

you say that as though 520mm is wide? That is already fairly narrow for a riser bar (hence your need for short grips if cutting any smaller)

I have just gone the opposite way and gone up to 570 from 520 and it feels far better. Easier to pop up front wheel/hop bike about and much better for any standing climbs.
