Listening to what mark thompson has to say, he isn't in much doubt that 6 music could vastly improve its listenership with the right promotion. He seems to think that by doing this it would take listeners away from a commercial stations? It would never work, could you imagine a blissful 7 minutes of low followed by WE BUY ANY CAR, WE BUY ANY CAR, WE BUY ANY CAR, WE BUY ANY CAR, WE BUY ANY CAR, WE BUY ANY CAR, WE BUY ANY CAR, WE BUY ANY CAR, WE BUY ANY CAR, WE BUY ANY CAR, WE BUY ANY CAR, WE BUY ANY CAR, WE BUY ANY CAR, WE BUY ANY CAR, WE BUY ANY CAR, WE BUY ANY CAR, WE BUY ANY CAR, WE BUY ANY CAR, WE BUY ANY CAR,
I would rather have type 2 diabetes then listen to anything other then 6 music, with the exceptions of the john kennedy show on xfm and weekend womans hour on radio 4!
You got it all wrong! It goes:
We buy any car, we buy any car, we buy any car, any, any, any, any!
Seriously. Listen!!!

Been planning that since yesterday. The cunts.
Now to write to my MP!
mine went on the lines of
6 Music is the saving grace of radio. it's better than that shower of shit you call radio 1 and radio 1 extra. Stop pandering to the public, grow some stones and stand up for the great music the UK has to offer!
i am disapointed to not include my new buzz word "Radical" said in a slighty sarcastic tone

we could get rid of tellies (just watch iplayer) and divert licence fee to a new radio station. Call it Radio sechs or something with all the bbc 6 DJs minus George Lamb
It's be better than bbc 6 i reckon

BBC ANGERS FANS OF THE IDEA OF 6 MUSIC
THE closure of the BBC's 6 Music has enraged thousands of people who insist it is the sort of thing they would probably have liked if they had ever got round to listening to it.
** **
**'Turn that shit off, it's Crime Scene: Navy Crime' **Would-be fans are now urging the corporation to grant a reprieve to the digital station, which probably featured lots of new bands or something.
Potential listener Tom Logan said: "It was a fantastic breeding ground for exciting new talent, according to this article I just read on the Guardian website.
"Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm picturing lots of acoustic sessions, eclectic playlists and lively banter with the spirit of John Peel via a psychic gypsy crone?"
He added: "If the BBC save it I'll definitely make a point of trying to have a listen. Possibly on Wednesdays depending on when I get home from work, though to be honest I'll probably watch Crime Scene: Navy Crime on my Sky+ box.
"Nevertheless, I feel passionately that it was an unquestionable force for good in the universe. Like one of those baby dolphins."
Emma Bradford, from Swindon, had been interested in possibly listening to 6 Music since hearing it mentioned on Radio 4 yesterday.
She said: "Apparently they had a show with those quirky comedians I quite liked. I want to say 'Brian and Terry'...
"Anyway, it's perfectly obvious that my lack of interest in niche programming is entirely the fault of Rupert Murdoch and his 4000 channels of crap including that dreadful Sky Arts which is actually not that bad and is probably what BBC2 should have been doing all along."
Meanwhile Conservative culture spokesman Ed Vaizey admitted he had made a terrible mistake and was switching his support to the closure threatened BBC Asian Network after realising that audience was much more likely to vote Tory than the Glastonbury-loving tosspots who listen to Radio 6.

The only two BBC stationsI listen to are 5 and 6, one is on lousy MW and the other only on dibdab, no wonder the audience figures are poor.
I would suggest moving Radio 3 to dab and seeing what happens to the numbers.

That's a good point. For a digital only station surely it has a big listenership? Compared to NME radio and all that?

"How to avoid making cuts" by the BBC:
- Propose to cut things that are really good, and worthy, and fairly cheap, and well loved by influential media types, and that don't directly compete with commercial offerings (see public-service worthiness).
- Await howls of protest pointing out insanity of proposed cuts, plus relative silence from commercial interests who realise these cuts won't do them much good.
- Bow to public pressure not to make any cuts.
...at least that's what i'm hoping is going on.

Link to the consultation...
You have to click through 12 pages of questions, but you don't have to have to answer every one, and it is probably the most effective way to make you voice heard.

Saw this the other day I thought was interesting, a friend of mine from within the BBC, a supporter of 6music, said this could not be possibe.
http://www.anorak.co.uk/241063/media/the-bbcs-big-pr-stunt-why-6-music-is-the-new-wispa.html
I have done the questions and sent an email. I fear it will not make a difference

I've been listening to 6 music from day one (lucky to have it on all day at work) and it provides an invaluable service to the music industry, and I have been introduced to so much music that I would not have heard otherwise. Several heavyweights (inc David Bowie) have given their support and Cerys Mathews gave a BBC exec a really hard time on the breakfast show last Weds as did Sian Williams.
So the good news is that the protests are having some effect as on thursday one of the board of trustees stated that the trustees might rethink the proposals following the high level of support from the public so it might not be over just yet!! And the closure will not happen until 2013 in any case so there's plenty of time for this to be reversed.
Whilst some of the shows did go off the wall (especially G.Lamb - although he was quite funny) generally what other station plays real music and gives a platform to new and upcoming artists? Mumford and Sons owe their exposure to 6 Music and are now enjoying success in the US! 6 Music only uses about 1% of the overall radio budget but the ratio of cost per listener is the problem. But s long as it's a digital only station the potential audience is restricted to those with DAB or use computers so more advertising is needed to expand the audience base.
Steve Lamacq and Liz Kershaw my personal favourites.
Does anyone here remember the original XFM before Crapital took it over? What a shame if that was the only alternative!!!

I went to the same church a Marcus Mumford, the Singer. He's the son of the founder's of london based church. SW London Vineyard. It wasn't in a proper church, it was in elliot school in roehampton. The church itself was started in the US, and had a very american feel to it looking back. THere was a main service for the adults and loads of groups for kids and teens each with a guitarist who'd lead worship. Afterwards we all played football. It was quite fun till i grew up a bit and thought it was a bit weird and left.

what. a. fucking. disaster.
I find their listener numbers hard to believe as well as everyone i know listens to 6music. Realistically, what else could you listen to during the day? Go on, try. The only one i can manage is unknown FM but even that has it's limits. It's like the BBC don't actually want anyone to listen to radio, if the combined banality towers of R1 and 2 aren't enough to make you want to garrot your neighbour then you surely aren't 100% human.I agree, gideon coe dropped the ball a bit in the morning, unfortunatly what with all the '6what? maybe i'll see what it's like' new listeners on board. Lavern seem to have raised her game in the last week or so though and who can fail to love anywhere that plays 'last train to trancecentral' at just past 10. I'm going to sledgehammer my DAB if the cut it - if i don't get a hold of mark thompson's head first...

B.But why oh why isn't 1Xtra for the chop as that definitely doesn't need it's own outlet as Radio 1 certainly can serve 1Xtra's audience surely and the audience figures for 1Xtra are about 530,000 - almost 200,000 less than 6 music
But as I said in my earlier post is it is looking like the trust is taking note of the protests so it might not happen.

Interesting seeing people suggesting giving the boot to 1Xtra in calls for the saving of 6 Music. They both have pretty close to identical roles (promotion of new music), albeit tapping different audiences. From where I stand, I'd argue 1Xtra has had as much to contribute to the UK music scene...can't wait till we see all these 6 Music listeners setting up pirate radio transmitters on their local tower block

All good things must come to an end.
and all annoying things seem to stick around forever ;)
If they close 6 music, I will stop listening to the radio. No joke.
Can't believe this is happening.
