Peening is a word, its to work harden a metal by compressing it. I suppose the Campag tool does do this but they are compressing it so the the end flares a bit like a rivet and to reduce its length so it fits in the drive train.
I've now decided to go standard chainset and get a spare miche 29 tooth cassette for when I'm doing hilly uk stuff. If I'm heading back to the alps or something mountainous I'll stick my compact sram cranks on as there 180mm which also helps with the climbs. New road bike is almost finished in my head!
