• Just a quick check to make sure I've got this right, if you don't mind. I UTFS'd here and on goggle, and found a fair bit of info, but I would appreciate a twelfth opinion.

I'm trying to help out a pal. My mate has a nice old steel Rourke with 126mm rear spacing running campag 7 speed and a double up front, with downtube shifters.

He wants indexed shifters on the handlebars. He loves his bike, doesn't want a new one, is totally disinterested in what's "correct" for period or whatever, but he finds it unnerving to reach down and shift.

Fact: campag did not do "ergo" shifters with 7 speed.

Apparently: people bugger about trying to use 8 or 9 speed ergos with 7 speed back end, with limited success.

So is the only sensible way to move to 130mm back end (cold set if necessary) and purchase an 8 speed rear wheel, derailleur and ergos?

Can anyone foresee problems (apart from expense and hassle)? Will he need a new front derailleur to work with the front ergo shifter?

    Many spanks

    Oliver
