I'm surprised so many people play freewheel instead of fixed. Up in Cambridge we only have about 4 or 5 freewheel players compared to maybe 20 fixed.

i'm still experimenting, but fixed/spd felt like i could mash more power down and accelerate okay on a relatively hard gear. now i have flexy shoes and no ability to pull-up i need a really spinny gear to get going. also - in my (limited) experience, if you can get ahead of someone from a standstill, you can control the pace of the rest of the rush to get the ball by blocking their route, no?
