Also, just to endorse what TSK said: Mental health is probably the single most stigmatised form of disability and that widespread stigma, born, as TSK says, out of ignorance and fear, in turn makes the issue worse.
Think of it simply in these terms: Just as people get injured falling off tall things or in traffic collisions all the time, so people get mentally injured--through abuse, cruelty, bad luck, or other factors. It's a perfectly normal thing to happen. Just like physical injuries, you want to prevent them, of course, but you don't go up to someone who's broken his arm in a skiing accident and blame them for taking risks while skiing--shit happens, and people need help and support first and foremost. Mental illness often happens because of a lack of help and support, and can certainly get worse. One of the worst things is this feeling of isolation from the rest of the community, being completely deprived of opportunities, and so forth. Only very few people are a danger to others and benefit, often at their own request, from sequestration.
Just saying, as there's been a lot of prejudice expressed in the last couple of pages, and I'm afraid 'doubly ironic' 'jokes' that sound exactly like disablist discrimination just don't do it for me.

Mentalism IS funny. Just like serious diseases and paedophiles are funny.
Humour is the sincerest form of, well... Sincerity. It like when you know you are good friends with somebody because you can make racist jokes at them, and it is funny.
In the "funny because it is true" way, because things are tangible, and you can relate to them. Combined with the general human characteristic of dealing with the horrors of the world with humour. All you can do is laugh at somethings.
Disabled's are funny.
Old people wetting themselves/forgetting things is funny.
Paedophilia is funny (pedo bear anyone?)
People falling/injuring themselves is funny (youtube, ebaums, youvebeen framed etc)
Street fights are funny/entertaining.
Cancer is funny.
Aids is funny.
Leprosy is funny.
Poverty is funny (remember starving marvin? ala south park.)
Domestic Violence is funny.
Suicide is funny.
Prostitution is funny.Etc.. and so forth..
At the same time these are all great tragedies/horrors of being a human. We can either laugh or get swallowed up by collective empathy and sorrow till we get so depressed that we commit suicide to the amusement of the local kids.

Indeed it is hilarious to make fun out of people with racial stereotypes. A friend may call you a drunken irish prick or a inbred wife beating-paki, both funny, but in sincere friendship. At the same time these are deeply "racist" and describe serious issues amongst the respective cultural groups.
It is a matter of context.
I doubt that anyone who is making jokes about Gordon Brown being crazy is literally hating on people with actual mental illness.How many people would actually make a dig about it to his face? He may indeed have some problems, but it is just a friendly joke. Strong no-holds-barred criticism/piss taking goes hand in hand with being the leader of a country.
