Mentalism IS funny. Just like serious diseases and paedophiles are funny.
Humour is the sincerest form of, well... Sincerity. It like when you know you are good friends with somebody because you can make racist jokes at them, and it is funny.
In the "funny because it is true" way, because things are tangible, and you can relate to them. Combined with the general human characteristic of dealing with the horrors of the world with humour. All you can do is laugh at somethings.
Disabled's are funny.
Old people wetting themselves/forgetting things is funny.
Paedophilia is funny (pedo bear anyone?)
People falling/injuring themselves is funny (youtube, ebaums, youvebeen framed etc)
Street fights are funny/entertaining.
Cancer is funny.
Aids is funny.
Leprosy is funny.
Poverty is funny (remember starving marvin? ala south park.)
Domestic Violence is funny.
Suicide is funny.
Prostitution is funny.
Etc.. and so forth..
At the same time these are all great tragedies/horrors of being a human. We can either laugh or get swallowed up by collective empathy and sorrow till we get so depressed that we commit suicide to the amusement of the local kids.
