The fella who did the front flip over the biggest gap cleared it easy. Surely a front flip is the most difficult thing to carry speed/distance?

Not sure, it's the right rotational axis to carry momentum and plus you can quicken up on the second which helps too...
This is all purely theoretical, I am yet to master the double front flip ;)
