you can use a laser cutter to etch through the anodized surface on on metals, and reveal the silver behind quite easily.... although setting up a jig for a stem to sit correctly in the laser bed would be a right pain in the ass.
rounded materials are also especially tricky, as you need to focus the laser on to what your cutting, as the stem is round, the laser would become un-focused the further away you get from the central section.
