  • A cyclist heading towards Stockwell on the A3 Clapham Road outside Dreams bedshop at about 8.30, hit a pothole in the bus lane and catapulted into the the path of a following lorry in the adjacent lane.
The driver swerved but contact was made between the rear wheels and the cyclist.
I beleive the cyclist to be serious but stable.
This was relayed to me by a colleague who was passing.
I wish the rider a speedy recovery.

  • shit that's awful, hope rider's ok

  • Shit I know exactly where you mean, that whole road is well sketchy at the moment,
I hope the rider is ok

  • Pot holes can be nasty. I once nearly had an accident after losing control due to the pot holes around Threadneedle St.

  • Especially with all the standing water on the roads this week, stay away from those puddles people!
    Best wishes for the cyclist.

  • Ouch, such an unfortunate crash. This stretch is meant to be part of the Cycle Superhighways project and should see its surface upgraded fairly soon. I hope they do a proper job of it.

  • That sounds like a nightmare :(

  • this weather is terrible for cycling, when its sheeting down its a real distraction when concetration is needed the most....

  • The potholes involved were repaired the same day as the accident, don't know what to say.

  • That often happens. :(

I remember hearing this about at least three collisions.

    I do.
It's called closing the gate after the horse has bolted.

Another thing, it takes more than a shovel full of hot tar to fix a hole in shit weather like this.
All that's going to happen is the tar will be forced out by the ice, the hole will re-appear and there will be loose gravel spread over a twenty foot stretch of road.
    Not good enough.
If the poor sod who got run over survives, he should sue the tits off the council.

I hope he/she gets well soon.

+1 - whatever was used to fill in 'potholes' (soot?) was frozen, disintegrated and now washed away with all this rain. Puddles extending out to the middle of the road in some places.

and best wishes for the cyclist from me too.

  • I really hope the rider will be ok. Sounds like a horrible collision.
Pot holes all over at the moment. Goldhawk rd is particularly horrific.

One promising thing is that Boris Johnson has given Police and H&S powers to the CVU (Commercial Vehicle Unit)... the new CVEU. Plus the £1m funding they lost will be given back to them too. Better than the merely voluntary FORS. Downside is the Euston crash investigation unit is going... there goes all that fantastic local knowledge.

To clarify: The new funding is coming from the Metropolitan Police Service. Also, the Mayor of London does not convey H&S powers (http://www.hse.gov.uk/)--that's the job of the Health and Safety Executive. But yes, except for the move out of Euston, it's good news--more info here:

This was a neat little campaign that was successful owing to Charlie's excellent work and a lot of support. Thanks to all who wrote in and added their voices.

  • Terrible news.

There's a pothell in one of the inroads to regent's part outer circle. It was repaired about a week ago, but lasted less than a week, so shoddy was the repair job.

  • I think Oliver is broken.

    Some one fix him.

  • He's over clarifying. It was inevitable when you think about it.

  • He's a vegan, they don't use butter.

  • Sorry, two out of three deleted. I think I'm having some issues with the new Firefox 3.6--there are some irritating new default settings which I've been getting confused by all day.

    Andy was talking about ghee.

But I really don't think that this is the right thread for this.
