Sorry Joe, hadn't checked the thread for a couple of days. Not sure that cheap hotels and Sweden are a good fit. The night before/after I've stayed in these two places in Borensberg, nice village by the canal, about 20k outside Motala:
Youth hostel - http://www.hihostels.com/dba/hostels-Borensberg-Glasbruket-054071.en.htm £20 odd for a room, standard youth hostel fare, clean and friendly - great spot by the canal.
Swedish youth hostels seemed to be uniformly fine, that site may give some other options.
And more upmarket (£60/70 odd), the Gota Hotel just along the canal http://www.gotahotell.se/english/hem.htm
They will both probably have Vatternrundan riders staying in them. I couldn't find any good options in Motala itself. Re the gym accommodation on the night of the ride and straight after - if you are riding its fine for a place to crash and get a shower, but if your other half isn't riding I wouldn't recommend it.
